| 11135 | Panzers | games | -1 | So close! | Well the screenies look good, looks like the kind of game I could get into. But I can't get it to run! It compiled ok, but the game always wants a server name. I have no idea if any servers are up or what the addresses are if any are up. I tried running the server (hoping I could connect the game to it) but it seems to think my libpng is the wrong version (libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.12 libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.1 libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library). It was looking for libpng.so.2, I have libpng.so.3 so I made a link to it called libpng.so.2. Gonna try to find the older libpng version although according to that error message it looks like I may have to recompile. I *really* want to try it, looks very promising. Is there a listing of servers somewhere? -Matt Bailey | 2003-05-07 19:52:21 | 7491 |
| 11136 | Panzers | games | -1 | Re: So close! | If I had just waited 5 minutes to post that....... :) Downloaded an older libpng, dropped the libs in /usr/lib and all is well. Hmmm, looks good except the physics (serviceable, but not stellar). Has the author considered using ODE? Anyway, looks like a great start. So far decent graphics, good concept. We need some tank games like this for Linux. :) Keep up the good work. -Matt Bailey | 2003-05-07 20:09:33 | 11135 |
| 11137 | ThinkTanks | games | 5360 | Customization | Can anyone comment on the advertised "customizability" of the game? It sounds pretty good out of the box (although the demo was perhaps a bit on the sparse side), but I'm big on customization and such so if it has a useful amount of that capability it would be a major selling point for me. | 2003-05-07 21:23:38 | 0 |

Perhaps it's an internet problem....but now they are back!!!!

BTW, is the original RTCW as unforgiving performance-wise for modem users?

Are there any similar commericial games that perform well for modem users (eg: around 40kbps), or is gaming dead unless you have got broadband? | 2003-05-07 23:56:55 | 11106 |

| 11144 | Racer | games | -1 | Racer | [This is Ruud, the author of Racer that is]

Let me make it simple. I'll release the v0.5.0 source code under the GPL license. People can take that and see where they end up. After that, I'll close the source and continue development.

There are proprietary things creeping into Racer; motion platform support for specific vendors, a network library that isn't free and which costs money, FMOD (although that's free for the free Racer out there). More will come probably, and it's a drag filtering out stuff for release just-like-that.

Do note that I won't concern myself too much with the GPL version. I will continue with Racer in a way similar to netKar; closed source but the executables are free to download, distribute and use for non-commercial stuff.

Note that I have a single Linux machine with an nVidia card; it's not really possible it seems to create and test DRI binaries on that system, unfortunately. Here I like the Mac and Windows platforms better, since you don't have to target for all kinds of OS flavours as much (or at least nobody has to feel left out).

As commercial versions of Racer seem to be coming close, and are so interesting, I am slowly bringing it into my work hours (well, when that is possible; enough to do). That doesn't mean Racer will disappear; with all contracts and contacts, it is understood and supported that a free version exists. This builds community.

I feel that Linux as a concept will grow fastest with a MIX of commercial and non-commercial efforts. Really, I see Linux as a Windows replacement. Not really because I have a grudge with MS, but it's just that they design things like crap. They aim for complexity instead of simplicity. Linux can be a relatively free OS and seems to work great for that. However, having commercial applications available for that gives you a choice for stability and support; something that companies need before taking Linux seriously. It's not an OS that can be closed to a smaller 'make it free or get out' group; that sounds like a hobbyist group.

Only on Linux do I get these complaints about licenses; Mac & Windows users just use the program and have fun.

Let's hope the 2 Racer's won't drift apart too far. It will already with the new sound engine though, and more is planned, ofcourse. Choose whatever you want, the GPL-license Racer updated by whoever, or the Racer with free executables. I'll probably can safely ignore license complaints after that. I don't feel it's limiting if I give out things for free but limit commercial use. It's just like a commercial game; use it, but if you want the next version, you'll have to adapt & buy the new version. With Racer, you get these updates for free, and if that's not enough, update the GPL version yourself.

Lastly thanks for the kinds words of berniw. :) Most appreciated.

I've seen the Amiga rise up and die; I've noticed people moving to the 'hobbyist' grade on newsgroups; same way with the SGI's currently. With Linux it seems to move in the other direction; starting from an elite group of hobbyists, it grows onto people who want to use it in a professional way. I'll aim for that group then, a much happier crowd, who have better things to do than to wonder what I'll do with the software next. Life is all about fun; take it where you can find it and try to focus on that. | 2003-05-08 08:33:48 | 0 |
