| 10626 | Cedega (WineX) | games | -1 | Give me a break | Come on, have you Linux people tried Windows XP? Today I had to reboot our SQL Server for the first time in 6 months and it wasn't even the system that had failed (my crappy programming haha.) Our main file server has been up for a year without rebooting or hardly any intervention. Top that off with the nicest interface yet and a stable virtual memory model and I say you Linux guys are nuts. I think my productivity in producing stable applications would drop to near zilch if I had to use the crappy development tools out there for Linux. Buy some nice commercial software or get hired by a company that will buy it for you. Start learning about .NET, get your hands on Visual Studio, and learn something that will stand the test of time. I had to learn about UNIX and C++ when I was in school and every day I wished it was like what I work with now. There may be more Linux users than there were way back when, but with Internet sites not making money like they should, free sounds good. Get out while you still can and leave the Linux Penguin behind. Not only are Microsoft's products better, they have a much larger consumer base. When you make a game, you want to make MONEY. It costs a lot to produce the games you people play and why would you want to spend the money porting to Linux or making a seperate Linux version when most of the world runs Windows? I'd say gaming companies would take a huge loss in that type of endeavor. So, try your windows game on Linux, watch it run like a piece of crap, then go out and buy Windows XP. You'll be glad you finally gave in :) | 2003-04-23 19:46:09 | 0 |

My productivity is quite a bit higher since I started developing in Linux. I use Kdevelop for C and C++ and Cooledit for Perl. Somehow I doubt you took the time to get over the initial learning curve (Visual Studio is no different.) If you just can't code without the Visual Studio IDE then you should take a bit of time to sharpen your skills... God forbid Linux actually starts to push out Windows and you find yourself on the street because you can't program productively with GNU tools.<br><br> I happen to agree with you though that porting is stupid. What we need are more developers using Linux and all of it's $free$ tools and libraries to program in a platform neutral way from the get go. People who think that porting is a good thing are failing to realize that if devlopment had been done on Linux in the first place, Windows and Mac versions would have been a recompile and a few bug fixes away. Linux by itself is not much of a target audience, but Linux + Mac is. So why in the world would you want to trap yourself into DirectX or MFC from the get go and force yourself into porting to Linux and Mac or ignoring that market?<br><br> And yes....I realize this fool was just trolling. Developers are the one group of desktop users that have taken to Linux in good numbers. | 2003-04-23 20:15:30 | 10626 |
| 10628 | 3655 | news | 6327 | Re: propaganda | Frankly, I'd put this up there with the apache and stealth fighter sims I used to love on the C64. I bet it's better than Microprose's old Airborne Rangers. Besides, there are plenty of propaganda games on the other side of the fence. At least this one will most likely provide a more realistic model of what the equipment is really like. I'd be tempted to play it if it's not another game where you play a tank on two feet.tank like you do in most FPSs. <p> I guess also having had friends and family server in the military, some during wartime, keeps me from being predisposed to put everything they do in the most negative light imaginable. I can't say I like their recruiting techniques though. I guess that's why "Honest Recruiter" made it as a release name in Xemacs's Oxymoron series. <p> Edd | 2003-04-23 20:20:58 | 10625 |
| 10629 | Andromeda 9 | games | -1 | Re: Open source? | The Source Code is in the Download section (there is only one file to download, you can't miss it). The licence is in the source code tarball, and it's GPL. | 2003-04-23 23:04:28 | 10623 |
| 10630 | 3655 | news | -1 | americans | I don't think it's so much confusion as the fact that not many non-americans feel much like playing an army advertisement right now, even if it's in 3D.<br> I certainly know that's why I don't sign up. | 2003-04-23 23:58:41 | 0 |

| 10632 | 3655 | news | -1 | rubbish, utter rubbish | Sure its a native client, but its also an obvious tool of propaganda. Who were the army aiming at when they made this game... computer nerds?? lol, I really doubt they have succeded in getting people to join the army as most gamers play these saughts of games and don't take it any further. <br><br> Linux needs real games! not this kind of dribble. <br> BAH HUMBUG! <br><br> its a silly game and I advise that you boycott it. Don't help out "Uncle Sam", don't be fooled by this game. It's evil just like America. and YES, I wreek of anti-american sentiment so have a cry if you will.
