NingPo Mah Jong games -1 Mahjong It's pretty silly to try to sell a game like that, since there are two free good version of it already: from the KDE and Gnome projects. 2003-04-19 06:22:26 0
Pingus games -1 Re: a few questions so using a blocker to "trap" other pingus will cost me another action to release them?<br> and if i block pinguses with a blocker and have only one whatever action left but needed elsewhere, then i m done?<br> So using blocker to earn time is not an option apparently. That means I must change my way to play this game. I didnt understand the "speed reflex" side was so important. 2003-04-19 07:34:13 10496
Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Bad bad bad ethics No, no gamers are being brought to linux from windows. THe thought that people are giving up a perfectly good OS that is running their games fine for a very stable OS that runs their games unstably is a joke. WineX isn't for windows users. The sooner people understand that, the better. WineX will not make Billy Joe stop using windows, because the second a new game comes out, BIlly is back using windows. WineX is for LINUX users, and so it's not dragging anyone over, and so it is only stopping native ports. And I can name at least one. Wizardry 8 was stopped due to Winex. 10545 NingPo Mah Jong games -1 NingPo Mah Jong It would be nice if people didn't call this matching tile game mah jonng. Because it's not mah jongg :/ 2003-04-19 08:06:17 0
Pingus games 506 Re: a few questions It always depends on the level, in the early ones you will always have a few blockers left and you will not need to care all that much about them, simply blow them into pieces when you no longer need them, in later level you will have much less spare actions to toy around with, so you have to be much carefull what you use and when you use. BTW. The "speed reflex" can always be cheated by the good old pause button. 2003-04-19 09:24:15 10543
Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Bad bad bad ethics <I>WineX isn't for windows users. The sooner people understand that, the better. WineX will not make Billy Joe stop using windows, because the second a new game comes out, BIlly is back using windows. WineX is for LINUX users, and so it's not dragging anyone over, and so it is only stopping native ports.</I> <P>WineX allows me to run Windows software. Why is that such a bad thing? My binder of games and other software is mostly Linux native. If there are more Linux users, more Linux native games will be sold -- Wine, WineX or not. <P>As for 'Billy Joe', I see very few dual booters and many Windows users that are not eager to switch...because of the thought of loosing what they have as well as simple peer pressure. Loss weighs heavier than any gains and people like to run with the pack, even if the relationship is abusive as it can be at times with Microsoft. <P>Personally, I want more people to use Linux, even if we never get the majority of people. One way to do that is to remove barriers working against the switch -- even if those barriers are mostly psychological. If people see it around, they will not think it's so unusual or radical. <P>* * * <P>About ~1/2 of the people I've been able to get to look at Linux have only done so after I've mentioned Wine and WineX. Most of them don't use either Wine or WineX now, but needed to know it was there just in case. <P>The other half heard of Linux but did not know what it could actually do. After some hands-on exposure, most get a little excited with all the new tools and toys that tend to get bundled in each distribution. Knoppix is great in these cases as it requires no up-front commitment and is largely pre-configured. <P>Why do people post things like 'great, now I don't have to dual boot anymore'? Because they currently use Windows! Remove the immediate 'need', and they might see that they *don't have* to use it at all. More time in Linux, more Linux users, more software will be developed. It's happening now -- the momentum for that shift is happening with the help of Wine and WineX. <P>Tip: Promoting OpenOffice and Mozilla on Windows is a good way to introduce open source to just about anyone. Get them used to these apps, and switching to Linux becomes a much simpler sell. <P>Understand that I do not oversell what Wine & WineX can do, only that they offer the potential of running software that is either felt to be "required" or is actually needed. Overselling is a bad idea for many reasons. Without the possibility of running familiar apps, many people would not even consider Linux. 2003-04-19 10:21:39 10544
Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Your ignorant bias is showing.... "It runs near-perfectly with WineX right out of the box. Coincidence? Maybe, but its a bit suspicious."<br><br> Yes exactly.. A few days back I was playing Speedball 2 using DGen (A Genesis Emulator) and I kept finding myself saying "This works a little tooo well. Isn't DGen supposed to be all buggy and unstable. They must have written Speedball 2 specifically for emulators so they wouldn't have to sell a Linux version."<br><br> Get a grip. It works reasonably well because Wine has been in development for a decade. If a game company wanted to port their game using Wine, they would compile a Linux version with Winelib (as Transgaming and Corel did with their ports.) The fact that some piece of software works well with Wine is a testament to the monumental effort that has been spent on the Wine project, not that Wine compatability was the goal of the game developers from the get-go.<br><br> I have a number of custom Win32 MFC applications that I wrote several years back. They also work under Wine. You think I'm doing someone a disservice by using Wine on this software rather than spending time to rewrite it with WxWindows/GTK/QT?<br><br> The Wine trolling is incredibly embarrasing when you consider the fact that there are more people willing to shell out $5/month for a subscription to Transgaming than there are willing to buy a native port of Rune. Poor sales are the real enemy of Linux native commercial games. 2003-04-19 10:23:11 10533
NingPo Mah Jong games -1 Re: Mahjong Two? There are more than two versions out there. But regardless, there is nothing wrong with making money on something if someone is willing to pay for it. If someone is not willing to pay for it, there are the free ones out there too. Your comment is respectable but it is not explaining much of the scenario. This version seems to be more "professionally" layed out. The graphics, alone, look more superb than the GPL'd brands. This isn't GPL'd therefor the programming, most likely, was not done by volunteers. I wish them luck on their venture. How many Tetris clones are out there "for sale"??? They're making money why not try to make some yourself? Just don't do it the Gates way. ;-) Peace. 2003-04-19 13:07:11 10542
VisualBoyAdvance-SDL games 325 Evil! This is an evil product and will certainly stop Linux ports of GBA games. 2003-04-19 13:36:18 0
NingPo Mah Jong games -1 Re: Mahjong I'm only saying that's sad that they are making a Mahjong game, since there already Mahjongs for Linux, independently they are free or not.<br> I think that, being the Linux game market small, they should create different games than the actual ones. For example, I would pay for a simple 2d pinball game. 2003-04-19 14:01:00 10549
