10479 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Help prevent native ports! Nonsense.

There is incentive: PERFORMANCE.
And there is another incentive: SUPPORT.

If a game uses WineX, it's going to suffer a performance hit.

If a company uses WineX to port their game, it's going to be more difficult for them to support in the long run, due to the extra layers that WineX adds.

There is incentive for companies to create native ports, and good companies who care about us Linux gamers (like Id, Bioware, etc.) will always choose native, because it ensures top-notch performance, and it ensures they are 100% in control of their own destiny.

For companies like Blizzard, who couldn't give a rat's ass about us Linux gamers, it makes no difference, because they wouldn't have ported their game anyway. Did the fact that Warcraft III ran under WineX weeks after it was released for Win32 only mean that WineX stopped a port? No, but it allowed Linux gamers to enjoy the game without having to reboot.

Even though the games are utilizing the Win32 API, we are stilly playing them under Linux, which classifies us as LINUX GAMERS. If you're a dual booter who would 'prefers' to be playing Neverwinter Nights under Linux, you are not a Linux gamer, and companies who see this attitude will not even bother to port to Linux, because these same people will just play it in Windows (I have yet to buy NWN because I am waiting for the native version, even though it runs under Wine. I'm also waiting to buy Medal of Honor when Icculus is done.). However, if a company knows that 10% of their audience run Linux, they are more than likely to port their game. I'm guessing we're about 1% of the game market right now. Not much incentive to port there. 1% is going to grow very slowly when people can't play Warcraft III and Battlefield 1942.. Whenever a game comes out that I want to play under Linux, I go to the company's forums and ask for a NATIVE PORT. And by the way, if a company decides that it cannot port to Linux, it is because they cannot justify the expense of the port because there aren't enough people to buy the game.. IE there are not enough people who play exclusively in Linux. WineX helps solve this problem. I am a Trangaming subscriber, but I always support native because it's a more elegant solution. As I said before, I'm not buying NWN until Tuxgames has copies in stock. You people think you're doing something good for Linux gaming, but you're only delaying it. You're afraid that one day companies are going to feel that a half-working game is 'good enough', and that's all us Linux gamers are going to get, but you are all wrong. Good companies who want to support Linux gamers are going to create native ports. It will be difficult enough for them to support multiple distros, and multiple glibc versions, etc.. I seriously doubt they want to add yet another layer of complexity to the scene. 2003-04-18 10:48:26 10253

10483 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Nope...won't do it... FSF =! The Linux Game Tome. That said...
Avoiding a game because it works under Wine/WineX is not in any of my plans. The thick CD case behind me full of Linux games and Windows games that work under Wine/WineX (and are only played under Wine/WineX) shows that if it's good, I'll play it. Mentioning the FSF, though, shows that you're a wee bit out of touch.
The FSF is for open standards and source code, something that commercial game companies aren't going to be able to live on. (Yes, there are exceptions, though most of those are of the 'open source, closed game data' variety.)
My data and hardware should be under my control -- and the FSF promotes that.
Wine (open) or WineX (minimally propriatory with most source available) are not the mirror oposites of the FSF's ideals. Wine is LGPLed, so it's quite in line. WineX is about as close as you can get, with much of the source going into Rewind (with a BSD licence).
Most of what Transgaming offers is a service...and I'll continue to pay for that service.
If you complain about them, you have a much longer list of companies to complain about in the rest of the universe of software available. For example, why not complain about the game companies themselves not releasing the source? Where's the public Neverwinter source? 2003-04-18 11:07:45 10259
10484 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: It's sad to see someones ranting I agree, it saddens me as well.

The only reason I was able to switch full time to Linux was Transgaming's support for the only game I really played, Half-life.

Interestingly enough, once this happened, it allowed me to stay in Linux, which prompted me to tell game developers, "Hey, I'm a Linux gamer and I want to play your game in Linux. Please port your game to Linux." There isn't much incentive to do this sort of thing when you're a dual-booter, because you just accept the fact that the games you want to play don't run in Linux.

I've asked for native ports for UT2003, America's Army, Kohan 2. America's Army is being ported, and I'm certain those of us who posted in the forums asking for a port can take credit for this happening. Dual-booters aren't likely to do this. And even if they do, their 'threats' of not buying their game unless they port to Linux are truly meaningless, because they will buy the game whether it's ported or not.

Bottom line: WineX allows me to game full-time under Linux, which adds another digit to the number of true full-time Linux gamers out there who don't dual-boot. Dual-booters who play Linux games part time hardly count, because they will buy a game regardless of whether they can become a Linux gamer or not. The goal is for there to be a market for Linux games, a siginifcant market that will make a company's port pay off. If a game port won't be profitable, then most companies won't do it. They only ports we're really getting are those done out of the goodness of people's hearts, which won't last forever. We NEED more full-time Linux gamers. Only then will it be profitable for companies to make native ports to Linux. If these anti-wine idiots think Icculus.org can port every game under the sun, they're wrong. 2003-04-18 11:08:08 7370
10486 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Slow? My ASS! Warcraft III is not a very demanding game, and it will run fine under Wine. It is also supports OpenGL.

However, try something like Grand Theft Auto III, and you will see that Wine does in fact hurt performance.

This is exactly why I think anti-wine people are idiots. They are afraid that wine is going to be so good that all companies are going to use it instead of writing a native port, but that is nonsense. Companies like Bioware and Id will never, ever, ever, ever, EVER us something like WineX for various reasons. Play GTA3 under Linux, and then play it under Windows, and you will understand. However, if a company like Blizzard, who would never port to a platform that didn't make them tons of money, used Winex to provide a supported version of their game, that would be excellent. I mean, they weren't going to port the game anyway, so how is this preventing a native port? 2003-04-18 11:15:26 10242

10488 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: WineX 2.1.1 Full So why don't you attack the morons who are ignorant instead of attacking those of us who buy every native Linux game we can, and play an occasionaly GAME OF THE YEAR TITLE under Linux with Wine? 2003-04-18 11:21:24 7298
10489 Cedega (WineX) games -1 Re: Description Explain why CS is not a good game, or why Majesty is better. Don't give your opinion, give facts.

And when you're done, you can tell me how green is a better color than blue, how vanilla ice cream tastes better than chocolate ice cream, and how the pepperoni pizza tastes better than sausage pizza.

You just have to accept the fact that you're better than everyone else. Your opinions and preferences are right, and everyone else's is wrong. Anything that many people can agree on must be wrong... *sigh* 2003-04-18 11:34:15 7318
