10374 PlaneShift games -1 Re: Planeshift License Yeah, artists don't want to GPL their work, as usual. How many thousands of bricks looking nearly the same have already been drawn? How many grass textures looking on like the other? Let's keep going this way... Perhaps one day we'll have a million, but each under different licenses, and you will still need to draw your own one if you want to make a game because each of those already done have extremely restrictive licenses! 2003-04-16 05:24:21 10368
10375 PlaneShift games -1 Re: Some additional info The project is open-source, just not free software -- it lacks freedom (for the project as a whole). It looks like the game engine is free software, but that (by itself) isn't a game.
Do the world a favour and be more precise with your words. Fuzzy wording wastes time. (It's GNU/Linux damn it!) 2003-04-16 06:04:32 10340
10376 PlaneShift games 7399 Re: Some additional info
Can you point me exactly to the part of Planeshift that requires you to pay anything or prevents you to use its code? You can freely download the game, play it, and also use its source code to start creating your own game. This sounds like a free game to me.
Another thing that might stimulate your attention is the fact that Planeshift sources are all perfectly available on sourceforge, and this to my ears sounds like OpenSource.
'Artwork is required data': perfectly true, if you are creating the game Planeshift using the Planeshift engine. If you want to create an original game, you just have to turn on your imagination and/or the creativity of people working with you, and create contents for your own original game. We are providing you with enough technology and code to build a working game: in this way you have to spend less time on coding, and much more time to concentrate on having bright ideas for what your game will actually be. This in the case you really want to crete an original game and not just a cheap rip-off of Planeshift for some reason.
what most people don't seem to understand is that there are 2 entities when thinking about Planeshift: there is the Planeshift engine, with all the code necessary to create and run a mmorpg game (at least once the project is completed) and there is Planeshift the game, created using the Planeshift engine. Since the game wants to be original and fun, its contents (artwork, history, quests, etc...) are not feely available: if everybody could take and use them, we'd only assist to the birth of dozens of lower-value clone projects. Why lower-value? Because if those projects had the potential to create better quality contents, they would have created them, instead of ripping Planeshift's original contents. And what about the projects having the potential to create higher-quality contents? I assume they'd just take the engine we provide and use it with their higher-quality contents, instead of whining around some forums because they can't copy what someone else did.
These are my points. 2003-04-16 06:23:29 10341

10378 PlaneShift games -1 Re: Planeshift License I'm a huge GPL advocate, but it's complete nonsense to attack people just because they don't GPL the artwork for a freakin' game.

Here's a thought: Create your own Planeshift with GPL'ed artwork, rules, etc. Until then, leave these guys alone. Maybe you should start demanding that John Carmack release the artwork and levels for Quake 3.. If they create a good game that we can play under Linux, then this is a good thing, and the fact that the engine is open is a huge plus.. It's a plus, and doesn't mean that they are obligated to release their artwork or rules. 2003-04-16 06:36:29 10350
