| 10364 | Pingus | games | -1 | Hugely improved! | The last release was a glitchy, problem-filled mess, but with a lot of potential. This one delivers; it's smooth, polished and a lot of fun. The graphics, background effects (I _really_ like the moving cloudbanks) and cheeky music all combine to make a great game.
There are a few minor issues still - for some reason the game lags now and again, but that may just be me running too much other stuff in the background. Also, the texts in the game (and the backstory) could do with a quick once-over to get rid of a few grammatical errors (not a big thing by any means, but they are notcieable precisely because everything is so well buffed now).
Big, BIG congratulations to the developers! | 2003-04-16 00:45:39 | 0 |

| 10368 | PlaneShift | games | 7399 | Re: Planeshift License |
I would like to clarify some points that are rather imprecise in these posts...
First, the main contributor to the artwork is NOT Luca. The simple reason you have not found other names in cvs is just because artwork is not there. If you check carefully, you will see that in cvs are only present dummy and/or base models required to compile and run a minimal version of Planeshift. Our artwork is actually hosted on a secure location where trusted team members only can have access.
I am actually the person managing the graphics department for Planeshift, and I can ensure you that we had and have many artists contributing to our project. All of them are quite pleased by our double license (and of course accept it) that protects their artwork and ensures that it will be only used for the purpose it was created for. Why this? Because the philosophy that artists use to distribute their work is different form the one used by coders. You should also think about another point: this is not a purely conceptual software development project done for the abstract coding pleasure: this is a game. Having freely available artwork (with this I am including also other game contents, like the setting, quests, secret and special items, etc...) means spoiling the fun of the game. Would you enjoy watching a thriller movie if you already knew who the assassin is?
Another thing you seem not to realize is the fact that Planeshift is a game AND a game engine. The game Planeshift 3D mmorpg is in fact a game created using the Planeshift engine. We are developing both things at the same time, and they share the same name: I agree that this may be confusing. You are perfectly free to use the Planeshift client and Planeshift Server software and setup your Planeshift-powered game: what you will miss is just the artwork and game-specific contents (story, music, races, etc...). This because the specific art and contents used by the Planeshift game are copyrighted. We offer you for free all the software you need to create your OWN game: what we don't give away as a gift are the contents of OUR game.
About the devilish project leaders: if you ever tried to manage an etherogenous and decentrated group of wannabe developers, having the most disparate skills and ages, you would know that a hierarchical leadership structure is absolutely required. Do you realize what having 10-20 different 3D artists, each one with his own style and prerogatives, means from the perspective of creating a product with one well-defined look? This means providing them a direction to follow when developing visual contents, reviewing their material and continuously interact with them to get what you need. A design document is not enough for this: what you need is a person with a vision to feed to the others. If not, the result will be a totally etherogeneous visual mess -> the players will say: this game looks like s**t. I am talking specifically about graphics here, because this is my competence field, but the same philosophy applies to music, setting, gameplay, etc... in short: to every different facet that is part of the project.
I hope this clarifies some misunderstood points... | 2003-04-16 03:11:33 | 10338 |
| 10369 | Pingus | games | -1 | Re: Source depends on Clanlib? | It just requires a hand patched released ClanLib this time, patches are in contrib/clanlib/. But anyway, it will also compile with a normal 0.6.5 ClanLib, it just will lack scrollwheel support then and has close-buttons in the editor GUI that can make the came crash or dead-lock. | 2003-04-16 03:13:05 | 10359 |
