| 10352 | Hellcarrier | games | -1 | GPL allows no restrictions to it. | It's easy:
If it's GPL then he just has to say it's GPL, nothing to add
If you are sayting it's GPL, but... it's not just GPL anymore.
He may not give the result the name GNU General Public License.
OTOH, he accepted GPL for the project:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hellcarrier/
# Development Status: 5 - Production/Stable
# Intended Audience: End Users/Desktop
# License: GNU General Public License (GPL)
The GPL says you may not restrict anybody in redistribution, as long as he follows the GPL, so the exception he is trying to add is not compliatiant with the GPL and therefore it's illegal
He should better remove this exception from his files. | 2003-04-15 17:54:27 | 10317 |

| 10357 | PlaneShift | games | 4877 | Re: Planeshift License | I'd like to add that I don't have any opinion on Luca's qualities as a project leader. Indeed, he may be a benevolent dictator on par with Linus Torvalds; I've never worked with the man, so have no idea. The point I was trying to make is that the success of the project is entirely dependent on his skills as a leader since the way the project is structured it cannot be split even if Luca were the devil incarnate.
In other open source projects, the threat of forking the source has always had a taming effect on project leadership. Leadership cannot be too arbitrary, or too mean spirited, or the developers will flee and set up a new project based on the same source. This creates a feedback loop, with the status of honor flowing down the hierarchy, and threat of forking flowing up. If the project has wide appeal these two forces balance eachother, limiting the damage of power while offering sufficient status to appeal to those interested in contributing.
Planeshift may become the most successful game in the history of quasi-open source, or it may die in oblivion as people come to recognize inequities in the system, but either way it is entirely dependent on the project leader since there is no allowance for anyone else to take over should he prove unenlightened. | 2003-04-15 21:06:14 | 10347 |

| 10362 | Freedroid RPG | games | 6077 | Re: subject | Interesting. And I thought the old Diablo-Style item drop and magic bonus system like we had in 0.9.2 were somehow interfering with the consistency of the game and the story. Well, since there seems to be some demand for this, we might as well re-introduce some more of this style. Then of course we must create a steeper ascent in the quality of the bots so as to match the stronger steep in Tux power coming with higher item drop rates and magic properties of the stuff. Well, we'll see if we can manage that. Thanks for the hint. See ya, jp. | 2003-04-16 00:05:23 | 10337 |
