Stephen Fueller, who apparently has too much free time on his hands :-), has just released the first pass of his effort to port id Software's classic 3D shooter Wolfenstein 3D. This version isn't yet playable, it's being released for those interested in playing with the code.

For those unfamiliar with this wildly famous game, it's a simple 3D shooter. You're a WWII commando shooting his way through Nazi bunkers.

Singularity Software stud David Scherer wrote in to let me know that they've released a non-playable demo of Fire and Darkness for Linux. I've played an alpha version of this game in Windows, and I must say, it truly rocks. We need games of this caliber for Linux. So download the demo, check it out, and be sure send feedback to the Singularity folks so they can iron out any wrinkles in this version.

The demo's available here. Get yours before they run out! The demo requires Glide and a 3Dfx card, and sound isn't supported yet. The demo is 8.5 megs.

Update 2/18: There's a new version of the demo online that addresses some problems that people have reported. The web pages says:

We've fixed the problems that some people on PPP systems had with periodic delays, and improved compatibility with some window
manager configurations. We still seem to be having problems with some Voodoo 1 cards under linux. If you have a Voodoo 1, please try
the latest demo and send us fire.log, the name of your card, and whether it works or not.

And if you haven't yet checked it out, you really ought to. The screenshots don't do it justice.

Update 2/19: Doh! Thanks to Erlend Hoel for pointing out that I forgot to update the link above to point to the new version of the demo. Be advised that the filename of the updated demo is ldemo621.tar.gz. My apologies if I tricked you into downloading the old version twice. |

Christophe Jacquet of MP Entertainment tells me that within the next few days Linux demos of their shareware multiplatform game Hopkins FBI will be released. The game is a hand-drawn animated adventure game (a nice change from all the 3D accelerated stuff of late). Two Linux versions of the game are planned: one which uses the the SDL library, and one which uses GGI. Shortly after the release of the demos, you'll be able to purchase the full version at their web site.

Yet another commercial game for Linux. Woohoo.

The Freeciv website reports that a QT port of the Freeciv client has begun, and that the GTK client will be included in the upcoming 1.8.x releases. A lot of tile graphics work has been happening lately too. |
