9949 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: Neverwinter Nights Client What do you expect from sales if Linux games are months, if not years, behind the Windows releases? Loki's ports where two categories: those that I did already play on Windows, and those that I had no interest in. As long as this does not change, the sales will stay as they are.

--Stefan 2003-03-30 23:41:43 9931
9950 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: Neverwinter Nights Client What I am talking about above is that Bioware first wanted to release the Linux client together at the same time with the Linux client. Well, still fine that we finally get the Linux client. But nearly one year later. This is nice, but does not help Linux much as an alternative platform for gaming. Of course one can wait for games to be released on Linux one year later, but who of you passionate gamers will wait and hope, if the games for Windows are released now? 2003-03-30 23:58:53 9949

9953 Racer games -1 Re: GPL is God? > once gpl, always gpl. Unless of course the copyright holder of the original decides to change the license of the next release. That would be in his/her rights and in effect be a fork. 2003-03-31 01:15:29 9939
9954 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: Neverwinter Nights Client UT2003 wants a Nvidia "optimized for windows XP" graphics card to play under Linux (some people claim it works with ATI also, but the README still says Nvidia), making even downloading the demo a waste of time for all us open-source users, who will not allow system stability to be affected by lousy binary drivers. 2003-03-31 01:50:51 9932

9957 Racer games -1 Re: GPL is God? Mostly the GPL is not about money or making money or whatever.
But when you GPL something, in a way it will sort of live forever. This is one of the attractions of Free software.
Suppose you disappear off the face of the earth, lose interest in the project, don't have enough time to keep going with it or something. Having only distributed the binary, future developments in operating systems (I'm thinking linux here) may well (probably will) render your binary unusable. New ABIs, new standard libraries, new graphics layer, or something like that. It happens all the time. Now, it would be such a shame, on both our parts, for that to happen. We wouldn't be able to play it, and on your part, something which you had spent so much time and effort on would just disappear and be forgotten. (Just think of that bug you spent all night hunting down and trying to fix, all that work being wasted)
However, release the source, in whatever form, and people in the future have the power to modify it to suit their needs. The project might get forked or something in this scenario, but it would be under continued development, and remain very popular. It would probably gain popularity.
Now, I can understand these people who post whining about the fact that it's not Free, because they have just found an amazing amateur project, and it is such a disappointment to find out that it is not Free for these and other reasons. Nobody is saying that you must release it GPL or we'll hate you (well, some are) but everybody thinks it would be a massive advantage for the project to be GPL, and in thier minds it's a huge pity that it isn't. 2003-03-31 05:08:16 9496
9958 Neverwinter Nights Client games 7766 Re: I like it just Fyi, NWN was developed with cross platform in mind just from the begninning. I know a lot of time passed till they released the beta. But what counts is that NWN was to be ported to linux from the beginning. And now look back when the project was started... Bioware should get all the support we can give. If not technically then in other means. They've done a great job until now imo 2003-03-31 07:07:23 9946
