Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: 2 and 3 The only difference between beta1 and beta2 is the fact that beta1 was statically linked to sdl, and beta2 was dynamically linked. It looks like you didn't follow the instructions, and your sdl library is out of date. 2003-03-30 00:37:39 9921

Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Neverwinter Nights Client Reading through the comments here I see a lot of people saying stuff like "You should be glad linux is getting something like this at all" I am paraphrasing - my question is why should be be so grateful. Correct me if I am wrong but linux is increasing its user base in droves to the point where a large proportion of the computer users are linux users. Why then do we have to be so grateful for something that windows users get immediately and we had to wait months for a buggy product. Business is all about moving your product to the largest number of consumers, since linux users have become a large proportion of those consumers I dont think its unreasonable to ask for equal (or at least something like) the treatment that windows users get. Dont misunderstand me I applaud Bioware for putting out a linux client - they are most definately ahead of the game. My point is that instead of being pitifuly grateful that a linux client is released for one game - we should be outraged that linux clients are not released for all games. Whilst the linux community continues to ignore the fact that it has become a significant percent of the community it will continue to be treated like the 3rd wheel and game manufacturers will continue to release games without a linux client. I long for the day that I will be able to turn my windows machine into a linux box, right now it is kept purely for games (the only reason I have found that I need a windows box) - I know I cant be alone in this. Anyway just my 2c worth 2003-03-30 09:57:53 0
Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: Neverwinter Nights Client Do you have numbers of sales for Linux-specific versions? What I've seen reported here and other Linux gaming sites so far is encouraging for the future, not the present. <P>If you have facts that show things have changed, please clue us all in! 2003-03-30 11:13:10 9930
Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: Neverwinter Nights Client <P Align="justify">Well, that is because Linux is not a dominating force in the market, at least not in the desktop market. There last estimates are that Windows is 90%, Mac ~3% and Linux ~2%.</P> <P Align="justify">There is an interesting interview with Brian Hook of Pyrogon at http://curmudgeongamer.com/article.php?story=20030317123706258 where he says that Candy Crunsher sells about 5% on plattforms other than Windows combined, where Mac is about 1-3%. Which would suggest that Linux is at least selling about 2%. If the above numbers regarding market share (from IDC, IIRC) would be correct, that would mean that ALL Linux users have bought Candy Crunsher. I would bet, that this is not the case (I for one, didn't). This leads me to the conclusion that Linux market share on the desktop is certainly bigger than 2%.</P> <P Align="justify"> Compared to the number of Windows, however, there is no reason to believe that one could make money on Linux with a top title. UT2003 did sale about 10000 units on Linux (about 1% of all sales), which was one of the titles with Linux support out of the box. Rune did sell less than 1000 units.</P> <P Align="justify"> So porting a title to Linux by the company itself is definately a labour of love and not to make profit. So, we should be grateful, even if it takes time.</P> <P Align="justify"> One point is indeed absolutely right: We need a better lobbying to make ourself heard. I do only use Windows 98 because of games. Work (and some games too) is done under Linux and I plan to ditch Windows (98) forever once it is no longer supported by MS.</P> 2003-03-30 12:58:50 9930
Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: 2 and 3 <P Align="justify">Have a look at the Linux Client forum at http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewforum.html?forum=72 there are plenty possibilities why this happens. Have a look at the FAQ (a sticky thread) and the threads which ask for a solution to the same problem. Most of the users have solved the problem with help from the forum and later posted success, but it may take some steps. Too many options to describe them here. Good luck. </P> 2003-03-30 13:05:15 9928
Senken games -1 "Make uninstall" missing again. Would a "make uninstall" be too much to request of ever game author? Ghu, I swear, the number of authors who think "I did this great game. No-one would ever want to remove it after I've scattered files all around their /usr/local/" 2003-03-30 14:59:34 0
