9822 Tom Bombem: Assembly Language Adventure games 7755 Re: i do not play this games anymore... well, I'm the author, so I guess I should respond. I make this kind of game because I enjoy it. I'm not any good at FPS games, nor do I enjoy RPG games very much. But I do like scrolling type space shooters. So that's what I write. This game is actually a port of a 10 year old game, which does have actual graphics and /dev/dsp sound. I just wanted to see how small I could make it. It started out as a challenge by a friend to make a Game Boy Advance port of the game, and I thought I'd see if it were possible in x86 asm before learning ARM asm. And I have a few other games out there, including a 3d accelerated one.. it's just I currently don't have the time or resources to work on something so complicated. Why compete in the crowded field of 3d games in which I'd lose out, when I can engage in some retro computing and have a little fun ;) 2003-03-25 06:31:59 9820

9824 Tom Bombem: Assembly Language Adventure games 7755 Re: Very nice! centering could be possible.. would require some console ioctl's. /dev/dsp sound would be more complicated. It would have to fork off a soundserver and have some way to communicate, and also the samples would have to be generated. The not-clearing the screen was a design decision, but that would be easiest to implement. Things to think about, but none except the last are probably implementable in the 100bytes or so I have to play with, as I'd like to keep it under 8k. 2003-03-25 06:35:33 9810
9825 Neverwinter Nights Client games 79 Re: Brilliant It's quite nice. It first crashed on me, but after upgrading to 1.29 and running "fixinstall" to fix the gibberish of upper/lowercase-confusion windows-developers always have, it ran nicely. My colleague who has two monitors reports problems, however.
There's some things I don't like (call me biased, I can't stand D&D, whatever edition), for instance that you can't wear clothes and armour, and armour just comes in one flavor: for the whole body. I'd really love to have those nice coloured trousers with half a plate armour. But D&D knows no body-zones or something along these lines. And of course, everything is wrong. The weight and encumberance of just about every item in the game is completely screwed. And I know what I'm talking about, I'm one of those guys who has half a plate, chainmail, chaincoif, several helmets, bastard-swords and a halberd at home.
Don't get me wrong, I guess Bioware got it right; the deficiencies lie in D&D itself. 2003-03-25 06:52:16 9765

9827 Space Hulk games -1 network play coming soon? Just like the old Electronic Arts verson back in the day of my 286. I went to dig out the old manual! I really wanted network play back then too. the promise of PBM (or play-by-email) sounds cool! Note - this game is like nethack in that you have time to think. Because it's not real time it is perfect for PBM. Saving the game and sending it as an attachment is kind ghetto but... at least you can save now! 2003-03-25 07:02:27 0
