| 9796 | Neverwinter Nights Installer | games | -1 | Tip: Check the shell output... | Use a shell when using the NWN installer so you can check for error messages. Do not use things likeKDE's run menu option or clicking on an icon that hide shell output.
Reason: If you don't have ample room in /tmp & /usr/local/games, the patch may not be applied. The GUI will not report a failure, so it will look like everything is A-OK.
Details: The upgrade patch is applied just after you enter the CD key. If it fails, a warning will appear on the terminal where you started it. Check to make sure that the patch has been applied at this stage. | 2003-03-24 04:14:35 | 0 |
| 9800 | Neverwinter Nights Client | games | -1 | Re: PowerPC, Alpha, Sparc, and PDA suppo | Have you ever tried to cross compile things? Sometimes endian issues can be a killer. I'd wager that's a big factor behind outsourcing the Mac port yet keeping the Linux port in house.
The fact of the matter is, Linux is still a tiny, though growing, portion of the desktop market. Non-x86 Linux is a tiny portion of the Linux market. If Linux has 2.5% of the desktop (IIRC, from recent IDC data, expected to hit 4% next year) and Non-x86 is 10% of that (I'd wager that is overstatement), then you see these incredible diminishing returns on the amount of effort you expend to port.
No one is arguing (at least not yet :) ) that x86 is intrinsically better than anything else (I'm rather partial to PPC myself, though only one of my six Linux boxes is PPC because of the poor price/performance, and the one is an iBook), this is a simple economic decision. Yeah - NWN would be cool on my iBook running Gentoo, but I'll take what I can get. | 2003-03-24 05:41:41 | 9780 |
| 9801 | Neverwinter Nights Client | games | 5795 | It sucks, really. |
No that's another decision.

By the way, the reason why I gave the Linux port only one star is due to two reasons. The first reason is the fact that according to their original release schedule the port was supposed to be finished several months ago. If they had actually tried, they could have surely made it but now it seems that the port has been written with left hand tied behind the back of the one and the only developer. Usually releases get delayed because of bugfixing but for me it seems that the bugfixing is left for those poor end users in this case.

The second reason is the poor quality of the port. Of course this is only a beta version but one could expect a bit more anyway: it crashes randomly and doesn't event work with some distros/hardware. And the thing that annoys me the most is that people still rate it as five stars, which equals to "perfect". If the beta version is perfect then why would they even need to write the final version? And if everyone is happy with a game of this quality, doesn't it also mean that the Linux versions of games don't need to be any better?

Yeah, I know that everyone is happy because of this release but it's still not perfect in my opinion. The game itself might be worth of five starts but the Linux port is not. And the Linux port is what we are rating here. Honestly, three or four stars could be a bit more honest rating but because of some mathematical principles and the current number of five star (perfect) ratings it's obvious that one rating of one star doesn't change the average. So I can can save some stars and give only one as well ;-)
| 2003-03-24 06:34:15 | 9773 |
| 9802 | Neverwinter Nights Client | games | -1 | Neverwinter Nights Client | It seems a LOT of people (including myself) have a problem making this work... I basically get a blackscreen, a couple of monitor clicks, then back out to command line without any error messages or clues as to what's not working. Tried both ravage's installer and the procedure on the linux client website (since I have it installed in Windows, I can do either). Disappointing. | 9803 | Tom Bombem: Assembly Language Adventure | games | -1 | neat | Words CANNOT describe the intense graphics and amazing gameplay of this 8k masterpiece. This is the peak of gaming right here folks... we can't top this. | 2003-03-24 11:37:19 | 0 |
| 9804 | Tom Bombem: Assembly Language Adventure | games | -1 | Instant fun | This game is very cool. It even has a boss! The sound gets annoying, but you can turn it off. | 2003-03-24 12:29:20 | 0 |
| 9807 | Neverwinter Nights Client | games | -1 | Re: That's great! | 2 Hours before you got out of the prelude? And if all you want is hack and slash, there are some modules out there that are just that. Some are better stories and some are better at pure hack and slash. One of the ones that Bioware puts out concerning the treasure of a dark ranger is especially difficult. And if I recall correctly, there is a hak pak out that actually puts a gun in the game. It is actually a specially modified sling and is somewhat buggy. But, if you want a gun then there is one that can be had. | 2003-03-24 14:12:11 | 9776 |

| 9809 | Neverwinter Nights Client | games | -1 | Re: Neverwinter Nights Client | It is a Beta release. Give them a bit of time to work out the bugs. It works fine on my system (Debian Stable, P4-2.4ghz, 1GB DDR, Geforce 3), but only when run as root. | 2003-03-24 14:26:08 | 9802 |
| 9810 | Tom Bombem: Assembly Language Adventure | games | 6457 | Very nice! | Very good work. Game is playable, graphics is pretty, sound _exist_. I would give 5 stars, but: sound is not by /dev/dsp, display is not centered (looks bad on non-standard resolution), and there is no screen cleanup after end of game. | 2003-03-24 14:52:31 | 0 |
