9772 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: 1 GHz? 128MB+ RAM! ARE YOU MAD? Dude, you'd better be kiddin us.. the Linux BioForums have *DOZENS* of people running ATI/Matrox/3dfx cards who can't even get the game to boot, so if you really and truly can, give us a complete and thorough rundown of your system so we can try and figure out why yours works and ours doesn't! (I mean everything, lib versions, video card version, kernel version, XFree86 version, compile options for XF86, etc!!) Thanks in advance! vranash 2003-03-23 11:32:02 9763

9775 Neverwinter Nights Client games 6672 Re: That's great! Is it wrong that I post a message detailing my preference so that perhaps the developers may take a hint? I bought the game and played it, so I have a right to say that I don't like it. I'm annoyed that the first real 3rd person RPG around on Linux, and its filled with stories and swords and stuff - I really wanted guns and metal and mindless destruction and stuff. If it makes anybody feel any better, sorry if my comments seemed trollish. 2003-03-23 13:33:09 9771
9776 Neverwinter Nights Client games 6672 Re: That's great! And yes, I realise I shouldn't have bought this game if I wanted robots, but I thought maybe I could get some mindless destruction and stuff (I really wanted mindless destruction and stuff.)

The reason why I actually bought it was because the beginning was quite good - nice and linear level-up-as-you-go-and-find-items-and-kill-loads-of-monsters. I enjoyed that bit. But then 2 hours later, I go into the town, and I have to CHOOSE a plot-line....

I am VERY much hoping that someone uses the engine to come up with a hack-n-slash based game...... and I hope it runs on Linux.
2003-03-23 13:37:51 9775
9777 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Works for me
I've made it through the peninsula. Cleared out the prison, moved on to beggar's nest.

Only crashed once on me, and I believe that was due to overheating. Cleaned the dust out of my CPU heatsink+fan and it's been fine since.

Athlon XP 2000+, Asus A7V333-Raid, GF4 Ti4200, Debian.
2003-03-23 14:17:03 9770
9778 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: 1 GHz? 128MB+ RAM! ARE YOU MAD? I am running Debian Sid on an Athlon 1800+ with the 2.5.45 kernel. (More recent kernels are either buggy, or don't have the matrox frame buffer driver due to changes in the fb core.)

I am using the latest matrox XFree86 (binary) drivers downloaded from their website yesterday. I installed them by hand, because the matrox installer didn't seem to work properly. (Just put them in the correct /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ directory. I had to reboot in order to get X to recognise DRI again.

X starts in a 1600x1200 mode at 16bbp. My consoles are a frame buffer with the same resolution. The 'fb' module is listed in the XFree86 config file. I use kde, and I have sdl 1.2 installed.

I installed the game using the wine from debian sid. (However, I had to install a few other things into wine in order to get install shield to work. I forget exactly what they were - check the wine mailing list. IIRC I've added a few VB runtime dlls to my wine install, and something called capow6DwinNTwin98 as well.) To install the game, I copied disks 2 and 3 to my hard drive, and then ran the installer from the mounted disk1 CD. When prompted for the next disk - just use browse and then point to it. Everything installed fine.

I then used the "Emergency restore" patch (The huge 47MB download), and then ran that in wine to patch the game up to version 1.2.9. It worked as well.

The game runs in wine if you replace nwmain.exe with a no-cd version. However, I had to disable sound in order to get it to run at all when I was doing that a couple of months ago. (Recent wines are getting better at this - they may even run it properly, but I'm not sure.)

I then used the beta2 client, and then just un-tarred it in the directory. (I copied the game to my home directory - and it has a user/group of my_username/my_username.)

Yes - I tried to use the installer mentioned here, but it didn't seem to work. (Crashes during character creation etc.)

Running it in a window, or as fullscreen works. The trick is to make sure DRI is turned on. For some strange reason, it can get turned off from time to time, and then I have to reboot to get it to work again. (Use AllowWindowedMode=1 together with FullScreen=0 in nwn.ini to use windowed mode.) If DRI is off, then everything is horribly slow, the mouse jerks all over the place, and the music skips like mad.

I have modes from 640x480 through to 1600x1200 in the X config file, and the game will automatically switch to the mode it wants. Running the game at 1024x768 is fairly smooth at 15-25fps. Turning on and off the various graphics options in the game don't seem to make much difference. I have most things turned on. 1280x1024 is slightly slower, but its still nice if you are "indoors" in the game.

Changing the BitsPerPixels in nwn.ini doesn't seem to do anything much. I have mine set to be 16.

My machine has 2Gb of DDR ram, and 2Gb of swap with a 2Gb/2Gb kernel/userspace patch applied to the kernel so I don't have to use himem. This isn't a games machine by any stretch of the imagination - I mostly use it for compiling and number-crunching.

Steven 2003-03-23 14:43:27 9772
9779 Xmame games 5676 Re: Um bug... Ok well done. Yes xv support did build by default; never used to. As regards to -effect it apparently is broken in this release. Basically I can't use -effect and -noxv stops the scaling.

I've noticed that some options have changed. The configuration option of the artwork folder is 'artwork_directory=/path/to/artwork' and for the samples it's 'samplepath=/path/to/samples'. Anyway if you need to know these options you can add them to your xmamerc file. 2003-03-23 14:45:43 9750
9780 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 PowerPC, Alpha, Sparc, and PDA support? Where are the ports of Never Winter Nights to these other Linux platforms? Don't pull that heil-Intel or heil-AMD attitude on me. Intel and AMD did nothing to improve performance of modern computers. Intel and AMD's architecectures are the same principals; with the equivalence of an unnecessary nuclear reactor in terms of scalability; it's the same old design with the same flawed power requirments. It's good to be considerate of other platforms that are easily able to be marketable, yet it's the chicken-before-the-egg ideal people wave their fingers at. Before you think to strike down my post, would oil be in demand if nobodody used gasoline-consuming cars? Yes, make cars that require gas and people will buy the oil/gasoline products. Take that idea as a parable; if you make a product for another platform that is more effective, then people will flock to it because it has a desirable qualitiy. If everyone discoveres they can play NWN or somthing else in similar matter on an other platform, perhaps one that they always wanted to use but they were always steered away from it by marketers that acted as used-car-salesmen, they will *WITHOUT*DOUBT* use what they want!
PowerPC Linux has been around for a while and NWN is playable on Voodoo3, Rage, Radeon, and GeForce; where is NWN on PowerPC or Power3/4 for this matter?
Alpha Linux has been around for a LONG TIME, a 400MHz ev56 Alpha outperforms a Pentium III 800MHz computer, and is playable on Voodoo3, GX00, GeForce/TNT., or Radeon; where is NWN on the Alpha for this matter?.
Sparc Linux has been around for a LONG TIME and this is a platform affordable second to PowerPC; where is the port? Many Sparc systems are in the IT places and is media rich as is the Alpha.
PDAs are everywhere. A GameBoy Advance is considered a PDA. In the not-so-distant future, all computers will be the size of your hand and have all the qualities of the current computing technology with the benefit of low energy consumption and low-heat output. Wouldn't it be great if a chopped-down, high-performance and light-weight version of NWN was available for today's and tomorrow's PDAs? This idea would work well for people who want a fast NWN on their big bulky home computer as well as their palmtop computer. It's a good idea to prepare, that way less work is needed when it finally happens and migration is already considered.

Hello Bioware? Linux is everywhere and a port to these other Linux-based platforms is the entire point of Linux: CROSS-PLATFORM ease! Bioware, please consider these possibilities! It's excellent to read the side of a computer product as if it were a Nutrition chart! I hope to see support for all these other platforms this year. We thin Bioware is cool! ID Software does, but I don't know about Microsoft... 2003-03-23 15:20:36 0
9781 Neverwinter Nights Client games -1 Re: 1 GHz? 128MB+ RAM! ARE YOU MAD? There is no doubt that Quake3 was a great engine. Fast and solid. How ever it is pretty easy for the CPU and GFX card to just map textures to a polygon and throw in the odd trasparent or reflective surface. Quake 3 has static light sources which are calculated before the map is rendered before game play I believe which doesn't take much to do. NWN how ever has multiple Dynamic light sources which are rendered in game as well as many reflective surfaces ( for example armour is a reflective surface ). If you have something that glows or you cast a spell the creates light it too becomes a light source. There will be shadows cast as a result. On top of this it has high detail textures as apposed to the very low detail ones in quake 3. All this adds to the feel of the game. Most of these consume lots of resources. The quake 3 engine is great for FPS because it is fast and simple but for a game like NWN would be wasted and would look very cheap indeed. 2003-03-23 15:30:42 9730
