9285 3507 news 7620 Re: Not to dis a tremendous effort...but Do reread my rant would you. I did acknowledge the effort made with spawning a child company to do just that. Create crossplatform games. Too bad he only mentioned the narrow focus of Windows and Linux and didn't mention any others, but may that was just an oversight. In any case, the interview showed that such a spawned company was not his focus, and for that I say what a shame. 2003-03-05 13:00:31 9257

9287 3507 news 7620 Re: Not to dis a tremendous effort...but Then I stand corrected on the time it takes to do a port...All the same, I see doing a port as not being that much more helpful than taking the emulator route. Granted, a port will run faster than emulation, but the stability issue can probably be debaited. In either case, I feel the main issue is Quality Games for Linux. I'd like to take a step back further and say Quality Games for non-mainstream OS's. I think the solution to that is to create the games natively using crossplatform friendly tools and protocols and not playing the port or emulation game. If you want native, then develope native. If you want something that runs on another platform, then either run that platform or emulate it. I'm not saying that porting is the route of all evil. I just think it's a cheap fix to the real problem. The real problem being no real commercial game companies for Linux. 2003-03-05 13:21:49 9273
9288 3507 news 7620 Re: Not to dis a tremendous effort...but Keep in mind that my real complaint is that I think the guy was being hypocritical when slamming the emulation route but then saying porting was ok. In both cases, all you're doing is trying to play catch up with what's availible on another platform. 2003-03-05 13:31:19 9243

9290 3507 news 4393 Re: Not to dis a tremendous effort...but I agree with your comment but also you miss my point {:-)
Whilst porting is also playing catchup, we are playing catchup at a source code level on each product and the replacement API's such as SDL allow us to completely remove the need to 'catch up' for any port, it is simply time taken to make the port.
Wine trying to play catchup by reverse engineering can never catch up with their moving target.
So by catchup I didnt mean timewise, I mean goal-wise. Wine will never be complete, a port will be. 2003-03-05 17:19:43 9243
