| 9237 | Simutrans | games | -1 | Re: nice game | If I die (or for some other reason cannot continue), I hope one of my codevelopers will take over project leadership. ATM there are 4 active programmers, but more than 20 persons do have the Simutrans source code, i.e. because they have been former team mebers or got the source code to work as kind of project assurance with the order to find a new team if the current team should die altogether. This is no joke. While I was working alone, I thought suchlike insurance is important. Now due to the large number of participants it got very unlikely that all team members die alltogether without a chance to find succesors. The team is spread among the whole world, from germany to australia, so even if europe is destroyed altogether the australians will hoepfully survive :) c.u. Hajo | 2003-03-04 08:29:00 | 9206 |

I refused to use SDL_mixer so far because I was afraid that too many additional libraries would make installation troublesome. But I think nowadays most Linux users have SDL_mixer installed, so it wouldn't be a problem anymore? c.u. Hajo | 2003-03-04 08:35:41 | 9222 |

Something you would not like to have near your house, but even if it breaks it wouldn't kill you instantly so the local auhtority allows to build it near resiental buildings. Simutrans is very scarse on industrial city buildings. There are 35 residental houses but only about 10 industrial, so I've used everything that looked remotely suitable to be an industrial building. c.u. Hajo | 2003-03-04 08:39:46 | 9224 |

| 9243 | 3507 | news | 7620 | Not to dis a tremendous effort...but... | I thought the whole conversation about winex to be pretty hippocritical. First, let me state that I too view wine as a crutch and a weak one at that. But the comments about how winex will always lag behind Microsoft....you can say the same thing about porting! Come on now. If some great game hit the market...takes a month or two for popular opinion to catch on. Then you deem it's worthy of a port. Six to nine months later we may see a port that hopefully will run as well as the original. By that time, the game is old hat and no one cares to play it more/less buy it. If you truely want quality games for Linux, then you shouldn't waste your time being a copy cat. Instead of wasting resources copying games...oh...I mean porting games...the effort should be put into creating games. Instead of hand picking a quality game to port, how about hand picking a quality innovation and implementing it. I think that was touched about in the interview with spawing a separate company then cutting it loose. My take is thats where the future is. Not in porting (or playing catchup) to Linux, but in creating creating innovating games for Linux. Unfortunately, the problem lies in the game companies. Many game companies only care to produce for the Windows platform. What I'd like to see is not another Loki, but a new commercial game company get formed. The game company that chooses open standards and crossplatform libraries as it's base such that games that get developed can be simultaniously compilied to work not only on Linux and Windows, but Solaris, OSX, BeOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and so on. Think of the NetBSD model and apply that to a game company. Now, after you have a working infrastructure to do simultanious crossplatform developement, take an original idea and implement it. The goal is to produce a game that when released, it can be released on ALL platforms at once. Then the only key is to be original. | 2003-03-04 12:49:10 | 0 |
