Not now, not ever if so unfortunate, but the
bio-guys working on the client has sure some linuxprogramming skills up their sleeves. 4+ years.

Now I just want the damn thing out, so I can say: 'Hooray!'
Better to NOT set up a timeframe for the release, than tell a "lie" though. =)
Unknowingly of when, is hard at the same time. Very hard.

/Chaos will Roam | 2003-02-27 03:35:00 | 0 |
| 9129 | Abe's Amazing Adventure!! | games | -1 | Abe's Amazing Adventure!! | You must have a real slow system, because on my Pentium 700/GeForce 2 it's way too fast. Time your gamespeed and update objects accordingly. Also, have a look at Prince of Persia for movement stuff, because it doesn't feel right. | 2003-02-27 04:11:53 | 0 |
| 9130 | 3486 | news | -1 | pff. | First it was Linux and Windows will be on the same CD and relased together.
Then it was Linux client will be available "shortly after" the Windows-version
Then it was Linux port will not include the developer-thingie for making your own missions and so on. (not like there's any "developers" using Linux, no no...)
Now it's "standard comercial issues". This is nice and vague, and tells absolutely nothing constructive, except for the fact that there is not, in fact, a Linux-client available, even though "shortly after" has come and gone. And there will not ever *be* a full Linux-port. | 2003-02-27 04:58:43 | 0 |

| 9132 | 3486 | news | -1 | It's not part of the "dev" process | I choose to believe that the reason we haven't heard about this before isn't that Bioware is goofing around and trying to buy time, but simply that the web site news updates are being done by developers, not the legal/sales/other people who're involved with the process of actually releasing a game to the public, as opposed to making it. So the developers tell us the things that are happening in the linux client dev process that they find interesting and newsworthy - "Hey! The client can do such-and-such now!" - and just keep all the legalistic, boring hassles on the back-burner, considering them to be less interesting than what they've actually accomplished so far.

I can certainly see how the legal/commercial issues involved with release would require some additional thought and delay - if you've been reading the updates, you know that the Linux client won't use the Windows CDs at all. Both the client and the game content will be downloaded from the bioware website + mirrors, the only thing you'll be using from the storebought version is the CD-key. The fact that pretty much all the content is going to be freely redistributable, and that there are unscrupulous people with illegal cd-keys, would be enough to give anyone pause.

My point is, Bioware has legitimate reasons to be taking their time. They messed up on getting the Linux client out when they said they would, but now they really seem to be trying to make good. Good work, guys! | 2003-02-27 06:42:24 | 0 |
| 9134 | 3486 | news | -1 | Re: NwN = 'Nights Wailing Ni!' | If you think they have been developing NWN for Linux in paralell with
the windows client, then you're teribly wrong. NWN was not deseigned to be platform-
independent from the start.
Just read up on the Miles Soundsystem discussion.
Nothing so far has convinced me that those developers era skilled on the Linux platform! | 2003-02-27 07:26:36 | 9128 |
| 9135 | 3486 | news | -1 | Too Little Too Late, or maybe Never | For me it is no longer a matter of waiting for the NWN Linux client. If it is ever actually delivered THEY will have to wait until I have time to check it out as I will be busy playing A Tale In The Desert using the linux client.

The fact that A Tale In The Desert has both a Windows and Linux client is good reason to question the Linux development capabilities of the NWN developers. But more importantly it makes it obvious that their was no honesty when they boasted that they would have a Linux client eons ago. | 2003-02-27 07:43:35 | 0 |
| 9136 | Abe's Amazing Adventure!! | games | 7139 | Re: Too fast | I'll look into this! I think what's happenning is that my video card is not hardware accelerated so the game's using my cpu (P4 1.4G) to copy images around. You could try running the game in software mode (I know this sucks) or at a higher resolution. (-s and --size command line args). What's the accepted way of fixing this? Doing some kind of blit-timing test before the game runs? Thanks for your input! | 2003-02-27 08:42:57 | 9127 |

| 9138 | 3486 | news | 4 | Answers from Derek French! | From the Linux Client Thread (on NWN homepage):
Sorry that we weren't able to answer your questions on your schedule, but we do try and keep track of things. The team has been working really hard for the last month on the Linux and Mac Clients and its just been in our best interests to keep our heads down and keep working away. Quote: Posted 02/25/03 01:49:57 (GMT) by skippy can you please provide us with some information about the development of the GNU/Linux client? We have been doing that on the Linux Client page, but I gather that you are looking for something different. Quote: Can you please tell us what you think of GNU/Linux development in general? For NWN, the process hasn't been too painful Since the game was designed to be crossplatform from the start, there wasn't too much re-writing that was required to make things work. Quote: Are there specific strengths or weaknesses compared to MS Windows or Apple Macintosh development? What has been the biggest hurdle in the development of the GNU/Linux client? What was the biggest surprise (positive or negative)? The above questions are simply far too involved to be answered here in this thread. Maybe at a later date, in another format. Quote: See, I'm _genuinely_ interested in these things. I'd like to know what the developer(s) think. What's your GNU/Linux development workstation specification? Dual PIII-1000, 512 Meg, GeForce 4Ti, Red Hat 7.3 Quote: GNOME or KDE or other? KDE Quote: vi or emacs or other? Pico! But Andrew uses Emacs. Quote: Debian or Red Hat or Mandrake or Gentoo or Slackware or other? We use Red Hat here at BioWare, but I am a Slackware man myself. It just feels more like Unix. Quote: Dedicated GNU/Linux or dual-boot? Dedicated. Quote: Do you use GNU/Linux at home, or just at work? Andrew only here at work, but I have a Slackware server at home for my own projects. Quote: How long have you been working with GNU/Linux? Andrew has been programming under Linux for the last 5 years and before that, 4 years under Unix. Quote: Do you think it _should_ be called GNU/Linux as RMS asks us? No comment. Quote: What do you think of the GPL? It has produced some of the best software out there. The BioWare Community Site runs almost completely under software that is covered under the GPL. Quote: Do you read Slashdot at -1? 0 for me. Quote: Does Bioware have any plans to release any code under a Free Software or Open Source license? Not at this time. Quote: I find it interesting that some developers participate in some discussions, but not this one. We've yet to hear from anyone who is actually _working on_ the GNU/Linux code. Why is that? Would anyone mind sharing with us what that reason is? I know you're all busy. I know that you have jobs, and those jobs have certain responsibilities that need to be met. I have a job, too, and my job requires that I do things. I'm not asking for anyone to go out of their way to have a heart-to-heart with me. I'd just like a few answers to get a glimpse into commercial GNU/Linux development. *sigh* Well, once the Linux Client Public Beta gets going, I am sure we will have more to say then. Although, if you have been in the Server forum and have talked with Andrew, then you have spoken to someone working on the Client. _________________ Derek French Producer, Live Team Neverwinter Nights http://www.neverwinternights.com/
| 2003-02-27 09:25:03 | 0 |
