| 8915 | A Tale in the Desert | games | 7602 | Addictive. Fun. GREAT. *sigh* | ATITD got me. I was only planning to grab the linux binaries and have a quick look at it, that was yesterday at around 10 pm...
when I logged out, 8 and a half hours later, I had just made my first piece of rope, next to the nile. And I was extremely proud of it, because I went a long way to get there.. wait a minute. I did not save the world, rescued no beautiful virgin princess, killed no ancient evil god. why the hell is this fun?
first of all, ATITD has the "just one more level" factor that every great game features... you just want to finish this distiff, and then, you just want to create some thread, to trade it for a loom, to create canvas, to... you get my point.
second, everything in the game has been done with great and loving detail. from the trees to the rivers, to the avatars themselves... a friend and i travelled through the lands to learn new techniques, and when we first arrived at the nile.. it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen on my pc screen. I felt like an explorer in the 16th century that just went through all of america and is suddenly facing the pacific.
also, you can't advance in this game by brute force, only by cooperation. an example : to create firebricks, you need, among other things, silt and wood. me and my neighbor needed lots of firebricks, so he gathered wood, I gathered silt, and we shared. doing this. we finished our production much faster than we would have been able alone.
also, the extreme level of depth is what makes this game special. want to be a trader? build your camp up next to a river, and sell your goods to passer-bys. prefer being alone? move up to a mountain and get by by growing cabbage. feel that cabbage is been sold at too high a price? create a trade route that imports it from the encampment to the north. think that there are too many traders in the region? make a petition for a law that slows commerce. and so on, and so on..
The linux port is flawless, smooth and beautiful. Pluribus did a fantastic job, and managed to do single-handly what the whole team behind neverwinter nights did not manage in months (sorry guys, but facts are facts.)
so, my recommendation : if you are into rpg, and think that something that is not "99,7% hack'n'loot with a grain of a story" would be great, then get your 14$ and come to the world of ATITD.
no, I am neither emplyoed / paid by eGenesis, nor is Pluribus standing behind me and holds a spear against my head. this game just plain rocks. enough writing, I got some flax to process. | 2003-02-17 07:09:17 | 0 |
| 8916 | A Tale in the Desert | games | 7602 | Re: I hate replying to myself.. | ...but I always forget something. If you run Gentoo 1.4, you need to emerge the package "lib-compat" in order to play ATITD. the package is ~700k, and you need it for many other games anyway. | 2003-02-17 07:14:55 | 8915 |

| 8919 | Trackballs | games | 7605 | Excellent | This is the best game I've played for a while. I'd give it five stars if there was a way to lock the speed instead of having to lift the mouse when the mouse mat ends. Or maybe I should get a mouse mat extender. | 2003-02-17 11:25:10 | 0 |
| 8920 | Enigma | games | -1 | Excellent game! | Just wanted to thank the authors for an excellent game, 5 stars from me! Some levels are really hard, will have to continue tomorrow... :-) | 2003-02-17 13:58:28 | 0 |
| 8923 | 3449 | news | 7503 | Ach, gotta get em in on Saturdays :) | I need these interviews to be on Saturdays - do you think you could manage that?

LOL, just kidding :)

I just enjoy being able to get drunk and suffering the giggles ten minutes before-hand ;)

The last interview with Aardappel of Cube fame was excellent. Trouble is, then, as now, I can't think of a constructive question to ask. Still. I do have a whole week yet :) | 2003-02-17 15:53:26 | 0 |
| 8924 | Kohan: Ahriman's Gift - WineX Edition | games | -1 | Re: Kohan: Ahriman's Gift - WineX Editio | Why would anyone want a port of those 3 overly hyped and not much fun games? | 2003-02-17 17:29:45 | 8851 |
| 8925 | Trackballs | games | -1 | Control problems | 0.6 is much nicer looking than the previous version (0.2.2) that I tried, but it has the same control problems. When I start a game, I have no control over the ball, and it just rolls off. (usually bottom left, but sometimes top-left) In 0.2.2, I would occasionally be able to control the ball, but 0.6 I can't at all. | 2003-02-17 18:05:13 | 0 |
