When someone criticizes Freeciv, the free Civilization IItm-like game, one of the first complaints is usually the quality of the graphics. Martin Hansen at freeciv.org recognizes this fact, and is organizing an effort to remedy it.

If you're interested in helping to create nicer unit and tile graphics for Freeciv, visit the new Freeciv graphics page and see what you can do to contribute. |

The Enter 3D Project has produced their first public release. Project member Kostya Vasilyev describes Enter3D like this:

The goal of Enter3D Project is to create a large-scale seamless multiuser online persistent real-time 3D world. The emphasis is on self-expression and communication through characters, chat, and home spaces. This will require a server infrastructure, multiplatform client software, and accessible authoring tools. We have work in progress or plans to deal with all these pieces.

This project needs contributions of many people, including artists (modeling/animation/texture) and programmers.

This release includes a simple server, an OpenGL client, and modelling tool for creating characters. Right now you can run a server, connect to it as a nicely rendered, textured and well-lit wobbly cylinder and chat with other nicely rendered, textured and well-lit wobbly cylinders. I guess the character modeller is there so some day we can be more than wobbly cylinders. This is an interesting work-in-progress that I hope bears fruit one day. I, for one, would love to hang out with other people in a nicely rendered 3D virtual world that didn't have any guns in it.

This actually happened a few days ago, but I forgot to mention it. There's a glibc version of BFRIS available for download at Aegis Tech's website. This is just a tar file of binaries, so you won't have to deal with downloading the whole 20 meg package again. And while you're there, don't forget to grab the glibc Mesa package too, unless you've already got one of your own installed.

James Hollenbeck wrote in to announce the start of a petition asking Activision to release the source code to NetMech, the network-playable version of their popular MechWarrior 2 games. Hollenbeck says releasing the source would allow ports to Linux and other OSes, bug fixes and graphics improvements.

Description: General Aviation Simulator

Version 0.58 of the Flight Gear flight simulator has been released, with the following changes:

Added JSBsim alpha code ... this is Jon S. Berndts alpha FDM rewrite.
Still lots to do, but you can watch a balistic flight for a short time.

Renamed Simulator/Flight to Simulator/FDM

Tweaks to assist building FGFS on solaris platforms.

Moved Lib/DEM to Tools/DEM

Started preparations for scenery generation tools overhaul.

More MSVC++ support.

Removed code that made the sun bigger at the horizon since this is just
an optical illusion in real life.

Bug fixed so that the sim can start out at an airport below sea level.

Also of interest is this comment from Curtis Olson, the program's primary author:

I have now started plowing into my overhaul of the scenery tools.
It's a big job and will take some time, but I am really exited about
how things will turn out. I am planning to add water and coastline
areas, better airports, streams and roads, urban areas, other land use
areas, plus a better tiling scheme to handle things towards the poles,
and lots of bug fixes to eliminate seams and holes that exist in the
current scenery. If I can pull it all off, I think we'll have some
truely stunning scenery to view ... :-)

At least two games that run under Linux have been named finalists at the Independent Games Festival. The 15 finalists (from nearly 100 entries) are competing for a $10,000 grand prize.

Aegis Technology's newly released BFRIS 3D space combat simulation that ships with a Linux version on the CD (just got mine yesterday!) is one of the finalists.

The second finalist is a yet-to-be-released 3D real-time strategy game from Singularity Software called Fire and Darkness. If the pretty screenshots are any indication, this could be a really nifty game. But most importantly, buried in their FAQ are these items:

Does FND run under Linux?
- Yes, with Glide/Linux and a Voodoo or Voodoo2 hardware accelerator. (Note: I broke the Linux version. I still have to fix it --Ari)

Can I fix the Linux version?
- Yes. -- Ari

I suggest that interested and qualified parties approach these folks and help out with whatever fixing is necessary.

I've put up Singularity Software president Dave Scherer's responses to some questions I asked regarding the Linux version of their upcoming 3D strategy game Fire And Darkness.

He discusses the status of the Linux port, Linux's shortcomings as a gaming platform, and the possibility of getting help on the port from the Linux community. I also added some more screenshots of the game.

The mini-interview is here. |
