| 8444 | 3364 | news | -1 | Re: Oh thank God! | Well yes, they do have access to the source, probably with a strict NDA. I think the ports probably occur in one of two ways. Either the game publisher contracts someone like Icculus to port the game to Linux, or Icculus contacts the publisher and persuades them to allow him to do the port. Or maybe it's some combination of the two. | 2003-01-25 18:57:38 | 8443 |
| 8445 | xkobo | games | 4512 | Gosh! | I got this way back when I installed Debian/Potato (when potato was the unstable version!) and got hooked on it very quickly, but I only just spotted it had a page on the Game Tome.
Absolute classic. And I've not tried Kobo Deluxe yet, but the quality of that doesn't make this any less fantastic. I give this 5 stars (finally), and unlike many people on this site, I almost never do that.
Oh, I'm currently on Level 42. Have been for some months now XP | 2003-01-25 20:03:51 | 0 |
| 8446 | 3364 | news | -1 | Re: Oh thank God! | I believe EA contracted Icculus to do the dedicated server port of Medal of Honor, as well as Battlefield 1942. I'm guessing that since he had his hands on the source, he went ahead and ported the client. | 2003-01-25 21:07:57 | 8444 |

| 8448 | 3364 | news | -1 | Re: Oh thank God! | Well, I for one wont complain about FPS. I love them and the more games we get, the better. Big thanks to Icculus to bring us some great games! (Especialy Serious Sam 2 :) | 2003-01-25 22:33:07 | 8441 |
| 8449 | Generic Collectible Card Game | games | 4512 | Re: brief me | That sounds about right. Although I think it's probably important to stress the possibility of playing things other than Magic the Gathering, from his website he apparently has implemented various different games already. Presumably you could make up new ones too.
I take it the stock of cards is purely virtual here, within a single server - I don't follow these things myself, but I gather the official computer versions of Magic the Gathering allow people to exchange real cards for virtual cards on the official servers. Or something. But I take it this one would just give everybody who logs in some small amount of credit or something, and you wouldn't be expected to have any of the cards for real (I have none).
I might look into this further in a few days, it sounds kind of neat. But I'm busy now. | 2003-01-25 22:39:35 | 8447 |
| 8450 | 3364 | news | 6547 | Re: Oh thank God! | yes we're all happy about these new games but it really wasn't necessary to bad mouth the older and more "conventional" linux games. They can be just as fun too, you just have to give them a try :) | 2003-01-26 00:07:38 | 8448 |
| 8451 | jetstream | games | -1 | Re: Why only subversion? | Subversion is better than CVS in many ways- for this project, the ability to easily store binary files is really nice, as is the ability to move files and directories around easily and quickly.
We would post a tarball, but there really isn't much you can do with it at this point, and it takes a good bit of effort to get jetstream and all the libraries it depends on set up right.
Once it does something a bit more interesting, we'll put up tarballs plus static and dynamic binaries for a few platforms.
--Micah | 2003-01-26 01:15:25 | 8421 |
| 8452 | jetstream | games | -1 | Re: ... and leave you wondering why? | Good question.
We only have bits and pieces of the plot so far, but it will be quite a bit different than most games.
--Micah | 2003-01-26 01:20:07 | 8422 |
