| 8284 | Elite - The New Kind | games | -1 | Re: Good to see a Elite Clone | The problem with writing a game where you could land on planets these days is that the graphics engine would have to be totally awesome to keep to everybodys expectations. In Fontier planets where not really very realistic at all, but it didn't matter so much then... Today people would wanna see hills and mountains in hugely greater detail... | 2003-01-17 12:15:08 | 8283 |

It still failed after I installed the qt packages for the latest kde, so it looked to me as though you needed older kde and qt libs installed. | 2003-01-17 12:53:01 | 8277 |
| 8287 | Elite - The New Kind | games | -1 | Re: Good to see a Elite Clone | Oh, bitch bitch bitch. Those people need a swift kick in the butt. Higher polycounts don't improve a game in any way, they just make it look nicer. A space sim doesn't need realistic grass, believe me. Anyone who would complain "Ooh! That planet isn't photorealistic enough!" ought to be forced to sit down and play Nethack for a good six months. (I think six months is a good minimum, you should be able to see about a fifth of the game that way. :> )

Starglider II was one of the best spaceflight games I've ever played - jump across a solar system, fight off pirates, grab a space whale in your cargo hold, then cruise down over the planet's surface, shoot down a couple energy towers, then fly down into the cavern system beneath the planet's surface and trade the whale to a collector for some homing missiles or something. All this on 512kb of ram and a 7.14 Mhz processor. (Okay, a few custom chips helped)
All it would've needed is a better transaction setup, a longer view distance on the planet's surface, and maybe some textures. (Flat polygons can look cool on spaceships, but not on most other things.) How can that be so hard?

In any event, elite had the single best 3d -> 2d radar display EVER. I can't believe how unusable most space flight games' ranged displays can be, 20 years after someone came up with a good solution.

-- Mantar, Rating: Deadly, 3/4ths to Elite when my C64 died. | 2003-01-17 13:37:04 | 8284 |

| 8292 | Astro Battle | games | 5644 | sweet! | They updated the Linux Version :) A note about beta tests (since this game posted a beta on happypenguin..): It would be great to know if the betas are actually for the Linux version of a game, before it is posted here. The Astro_Battle beta was windows-only.. I think this is the third time I've (inadvertently) been on a windows-only beta from this site... I love the site and all :) but it would be nice if the betas posted here were actually for linux. -Largos | 2003-01-17 15:29:47 | 0 |

| 8294 | 3337 | news | -1 | Why no installer, you sissies? | It is because there is no feasable way to get the game resources from the InstallShield cabinet files on the Windows version CDs.
Why can there be an installer for Unreal Tournamant 2003 but not Neverwinter Nights? Does UT2003 not use InstallShield or something? Is the InstallShield file format uncrackable? What about this? | 2003-01-17 18:03:25 | 0 |
| 8295 | 3337 | news | -1 | Re: Why no installer, you sissies? | As soon as someone says "no feasible way" to the Linux community, a feasible way emerges. I fully expect that someone will produce a working installer within days of the release... | 2003-01-17 18:07:16 | 8294 |
