8051 3284 news 4425 Linux offline I bought this game on Tuxgames. At work I play online on Win2k. At home I play offline on Linux. This doesn't show up but I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't run on Linux. 2003-01-07 04:23:05 0
8052 3284 news -1 give it time ...but 40% of servers are on GNU/Linux - what this says is people are willing to RUN GNU/Linux. Period. They *will* use it as a game platform in time, as it becomes more planted on the desktop - but they will use it. Becoming farmiliar with it in the first place is a challenge, there is a learning curve (no different than any OS -- WinXX included)... as people get tired of the MS tax, and GNU/Linux matures as a desktop OS, these numbers will change.

that said, i run UT3K as a client *and* server in GNU/Linux.
2003-01-07 06:10:57 0

8054 3284 news -1 Re: give it time The thing I wonder is, how many of those Win32 folks actually *paid* the MS tax? 2003-01-07 06:29:34 8052
8055 3284 news 3493 How many play offline? I have been playing UT2003 almost every day pretty consistantly since the demo came out, but have never played online. I can't believe I am the only person who does this. 2003-01-07 07:41:59 0
8056 3284 news 5360 Performance It's important to remember that UT2003 has rather poor Linux performance for many people, compared to the Windows version. Add in the installer issues, the trouble some people have installing NVidia's drivers, and the fact that until the latest patch an NVidia card was REQUIRED, and there's a lot of reasons to play the game in Windows instead even if you have both Win & Linux. The server percentage seems to say that the market is there, but any future games have to be able to be installed and played a lot more easily if they want to get client numbers up.

Also, the numbers only represent online users, which are usually a small percentage of the people actually playing the game. 2003-01-07 09:36:12 0
8057 3284 news 6952 Tell us about that client There's no hint on the box or in that tv commercials. And there's no official support. Everyone who fears to be out of luck getting patches after 6 months won't buy this game too. And we Linuxers have UT, Tribes2, Quake3... You can't play all these games simultaniously. Well, and I thought I would play NWN now :-) After a few months it isn't a big deal to buy these for 43 Euro each. They are out of the Top 20 and become dated. 34,99€ [Euro], 29,99 and I'll think about them again :-) Or how about a new box @ the latest patch level? Especially NWN wasn't done, when it went gold. And for UT2k3 you need a nvidia Gf card. All TNT, ATI & Matrox users are out of luck. It will take at least 2 (terriffic) years for 3-5% or even higher marketshare. What we don't need is a second Linux hype like 3 years ago. 2003-01-07 09:41:16 0
8058 3285 news 4425 Yes! At last! Cars! I hope it is Burout 2! If it is Colin McRaeeaeaee (not sure of spelling) I'll buy it anyway, but I prefer Crazy Taxi style games to rally games. 2003-01-07 09:41:27 0
8060 3284 news -1 no advertisements either everyone is forgetting how NASTY the advertisment was or should I say lack thereof ??? there is STILL NO MENTION at epicgames or unrealtournament2003.com that the game even RUNS in linux..how tasteful is that? given the fact that so many servers run the much more stable linux server but yet us linux fans got the shaft on the client EXCEPT if you factor in that it plays fine locally..for many fans thats quite acceptable but online play is desireable for many for obvious reasons. It would play okay for a while but eventually turn totally laggy. We got the shaft on the opengl front as well so who can blame poor linux client sales and of course as other people have mentioned the poll doesn't take into account those playing locally but of course would affect the poll on both OS fronts. I took the damn game back after TIRING of waiting for a 'upgrade' from a totally LOUSY netcode ( HORRIBLE LAG) coupled with the fact that my system resources were totally FRIED after quitting the game..granted windows users saw the issue too but IMHO its totally inexecuseable on either platform.. I"ll play whats here/installs readily/has """fair' acknowledgement that it runs in linux""" epic you lost my vote for now bigtime --=== 2003-01-07 09:47:54 0
8061 Shut The Box games -1 Shut the Box If you must have one dice game on your machine then it must be shut the box. I would definately give it two thumbs up and a snap. 2003-01-07 10:13:33 0
