FreeCol games 6314 Re: Why Java? I respect your opinion about Java, but I would like to mention the fact that Java is not per definition slow. People are still saying the same phrases they said years ago, but these days Java's speed is better than ever.<br> I have used both Forte and JBuilder and, yes, they are slower than other IDE's. But FreeCol uses Java 1.4's full screen support which means that it is hardware accelerated. I think you should first give it a try before saying "it's slow because it's Java".<br> I have also programmed Java GUI's without hardware acceleration and the speed of the GUI depends on the abilities of the programmers. I'm not saying that I can make Java fly, but I do my best.<br> The only downside to Java's full screen support is that it's so new that there are still a few bugs left (sometimes related to Linux). 2003-01-03 10:43:33 7990
FreeCol games -1 Re: Why Java? Arrgh... First of all there is Java, then there is Java. People repeat the same complaints again and again without checking the facts. Java is a perfectly viable platform for a game - especially 1.4 First of all, the main speed hog in Java is the GUI interface Swing, due to its architecture, but it has become better and is perfectly usable since 1.4. Secondly since 1.4 operations like blitting are memory accelerated, if done correctly. So why should you not implement a game in java. I´ve seen full blown 3d games implemented in java on top of OpenGL and they work fine :-) Believe me, give java a shot again, the language and the runtime has come a long way since 1.1.4 (the version everybody still bitches upon) 2003-01-03 12:20:57 7990
iMaze games -1 Re: Midi-Maze! Hurray!! But there are! <grin> I've still got an old Mega ST and the midi cables for that game. I still remember games like that and Dungeon Master - boy, I'd love to see someone port that game to Linux! Ah, the hours spent in those dank, dark grey dungeons... :-) 2003-01-03 13:03:03 7999
DOSbox games 4 promising This emulator looks promising. Right now it won't help with most DOS games, as there is only support for real mode so far. 2003-01-03 14:51:55 0
DOSbox games -1 Why? Can someone explain to me why this is needed? What ever happened to dosemu? I remember 4 years ago I was running duke nukem 3d through dosemu with sound at full speed on a ppro200. It also perfectly ran Wacky Wheels! What more do you need? This program can't even run protected mode apps yet. Why not just use dosemu? It already works very well. 2003-01-03 16:20:22 0
iMaze games -1 Re: Midi-Maze! Hurray!! there are ST emulators for Linux (take a look at www.atari.st - Steem is very good) 2003-01-03 16:23:59 8002

DOSbox games -1 Re: Why? At least for me, dosemu is very hard to use. In fact i've never been able to start a program with it. When i wan to start a game, it only freezes, i've to kill the process. Dosbox on the other hand is very easy to use and i'm quite impressed. I have no doubt that they'll add protected mode once they've perfect compatibility. 2003-01-03 20:26:40 8004
DOSbox games -1 Re: Why? That's weird. I never had any trouble getting dosemu to run all sorts of programs. Even recently I did an apt-get of dose always mu in debian, edited some conf files, and played some old games. Everythingseems to work perfectly. I reccomend you install Dos 6.22 rather than using the freedos that comes shipped. That may be one reason that I've had such success with it. 2003-01-03 20:36:11 8008
