| 7909 | GL-117 | games | 506 | Re: Not worth the trouble | Glut is a pretty basic OpenGL library (well, you can't really get more basic than Glut) and should come with every distro on this planet, if it doesn't came with yours is probally better to switch your distro. | 2002-12-25 07:26:37 | 7907 |
| 7910 | GL-117 | games | 506 | Great! |
Debian package installed easily [apt-get install gl-117 ;)], joystick config was quickly findable in the menu and the throttle/ruder mixup was quickly corrected in ~/.gl-117/conf.interface, great so the game could start :)

Gameplay is fast and simply, you shouldn't expect a real flightsimulator, but more WingCommander-with-ground, the game reminds me a bit of Furry^3. There is a tutorial and there are a two handfulls of missions, ranging from air-to-air defense to attacking ground vehicles, there are weather effects, nice lightnings and things like that. Even so it is simply it basically has everything what you would expect from a real game. Its fun, plain and simple

Drawbacks? Well, the gfx is not really spectacular, the planes are bulid up from a handfull of triangles and look worse than what you have seen on your Amiga. The explosions aren't spectacular either. The ground is smooth, too smooth in my taste. The game also slows down on the highest detail level, so I had to switch to the lowest on a Matrox G450 + 1GHz Athlon, on that it was very fluent, but there is lots of room for optimizations (level of detail?!). The shoots also look quite blocky. Sound is there, but again nothing spectacular. The fonts in the menus are pretty jaggy.

After all a pretty nice fast action game, that could need quite a bit of cleanup and optimization. Never the less its real fun flying around and seeing other planes shooting at you, having seen such action for a long time. One of the better linux games around and actually a pretty playable.
| 2002-12-25 07:39:24 | 0 |

| 7913 | KCheckers | games | -1 | Bug in 0.2 | I tried 0.2 (the latest version for which there is a .deb) but ran into a bug... If I select a piece, then change my mind and select a different piece, it keeps saying "incorrect path" or something in the status line (meaning I can not move the piece). At that point, I have no choice but to select a piece and make a move that jumps over an opponent's piece. | 2002-12-26 02:40:45 | 0 |

| 7915 | Allegro Sprite Editor | games | -1 | .tar.gz | If I try and download the source archive, the only thing I get when trying to unpack it is: $ tar xzf ase-0.1.0a.tar.gz gzip: stdin: not in gzip format So I can't give it a try, but it looks quite promising from the screenshots. | 7917 | Freeciv | games | -1 | Re: Criticisms != Insults | Knowing the ISO view is done on request by someone who didnt like the iso view in the first place makes it feel pretty good not ? The developer hacked a iso view cause of popular demand, something you dont see very often in the Open Source World. So now its ready to be perfected by others.. | 2002-12-26 05:24:38 | 7904 |
