| 7900 | Vertigo Flight Simulator | games | 506 | Good but... | <p>First thing I missed was joystick support, it seems to have been present in the DOS version, but is greyed-out in the linux version, so I had to play with the mouse, which wasn't that much fun after all. The flight model looks relativ good (well, as far as I can tell from playing with mouse), but graphics are a bit dated and software only, hardware OpenGL and a handfull textures could probally do wonders. And after all this game, like most other linux games, is pretty much incomplete, you basically get a start menu where you can turn a handfull of options and are then droped right into the plane, no mission briefing, trainings missions, etc. Its more an 'engine-test' then a game. </P><p>By looking at the news section of the game one can see that it doesn't seem to be activly maintained any more, which is sad, since this game could be turned into a five-star with a handfull of missions, joystick support and a bit better gfx.</p> | 2002-12-24 15:30:10 | 0 |

This game has nearly everything I expect from a good game, first good and consistent gfx, even so the sprites are very simple they look good, especially with the particle explosions. The enemy formations are pretty nice and alternate a lot. The boss-enemies (well, I only seen the first one so far) are cool. And the game has a nifty tutorial which explains the color-chain stuff and other things. Stuff that I currntly miss is joystick/joypad support, sound-effects and probally something happening in the background to make one feel moving upwards or somethnig like this. There are other games around, like chromium, which have more detailed sprites, but this game has a lot better gameplay! The iso-view is pretty ugly done and the UI is also far from the nicest possible. Starting the server from command line, instead of having a GUI configuration dialog for it is also not that nice. Comparing freeciv to Civ2, it actually doesn't look that bad, Civ2's GUI was ugly as well, but there are a lot things that could have done in a better way. Freeciv is not a bad game and probally more than a '1 star' game, but its not the best game on earth, far from it.</p> <p>Most comments on happypenguin.org are really just hype, having one in between of all that is telling the truth might hurt a bit, but it is actually necessary and good. I have seen to many games here that where hyped as 5 star, but under real conditions just are 1 or 2 star worth.
