7753 Virtual Jay Peak games 6924 Nice. Great work.. Looks quite good once the settings are cranked up. Put the full version up for sale at tuxgames and I'll buy a copy (for a reasonable price, of course..) 2002-12-14 10:49:18 0
7754 Mad Bomber games 6924 Outstanding This is a really great game.. One of the five or so that I play on a regular basis when I want to mess around a bit. One minor qualm: The Debian Testing version, 0.1.8-8, has the line to hide the cursor commented out... (IMHO, the mouse cursor should be hidden.. The screenshot here on happypenguin shows it hidden.. Not really sure why it was changed...) 2002-12-14 11:07:32 0

7756 3208 news -1 Re: Just hire a competent coder! No, they screwed up in the design phase. That has absolutely nothing to with the person who's doing the Linux port. 2002-12-14 11:32:14 7739
7757 Iter Vehemens Ad Necem games 6896 hackin'-slashin'-torture and pain the ability to cut the limbs off the monsters is great... I once cut _all_ limbs off a zombie, before it died.. what a mess... this is the best rogue-like I have ever played :) :) :) :) :) 2002-12-14 13:38:47 0
7760 Iter Vehemens Ad Necem games -1 Having made it not very far This is a well-executed game, with a tone I haven't seen in any other roguelike. Decidedly inclined toward crude humor, but entertaining enough.
<l>
Food is an issue. You have to pretty much eat anything that isn't poisonous if you want to live. Especially in the overland map, where time passes at 10 ticks per step. The good news is, I've never choked on my food, nethack style. It might be possible, but I've never found enough food to find out.
Severing limbs is a neat concept, but when it happens to you, it can be frustrating. I got to play the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grain with a lucky wolf earlier today.
The story so far is engaging, in a "how is my character going to get reamed next?" kind of way.
The graphics are quite reasonable, considering this is a roguelike.
How well you do seems to depend a lot on luck. If you don't have enough cool stuff by the first big encounter (which happens on level 3), you're going to die. Also, no matter how good my character has been, a lucky headshot has pretty much always been enough to finish him.
Speaking of head shots, a numerical representation of how many hit points you have at each location would be helpful.
It doesn't have the kind of depth nethack does yet; there aren't that many ways to interact with your environment (though the inclusion of banana peels and broken bottles as traps is very cool.) </l>
All in all, four penguins out of five from this player. 2002-12-14 15:08:16 0
7762 3208 news -1 Whee!
Now here are some good news:
1.St. Lantinga (of SDL fame..PLEASE TELL ME YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT!) has ported the RAD tools to Linux.
2.RAD also say they have a port - dunno if it's the same as Sam's or one of their own.
So, those problems are solved. Maybe there's NWN for us..back to hacking file formats for Linux/Mac tools. 2002-12-14 15:16:59 0
7763 3208 news -1 big surprise. i stopped waiting for this many months ago. the release date of this port went from 'in box' to 'fall 2002' to 'winter 2002'. its not that i doubt it will be released, but its just too late. those of you who are still (im)patiently waiting for this smogware should probably reevaluate your priorities.. there have actually been several quality games released for linux since bioware's poor planning and all-around incompetence became obvious. defining smogware: not quite vaporware, but man does it stink.. 2002-12-14 15:40:06 0
7764 3200 news -1 Re: benchmark The "nv" drivers are the open source ones from xfree only suitable for 2d display(and very stable btw). The free mandrake download doesn't include proprietary apps like nvidia, flash, realplayer etc.. You need to install the nvidia drivers on there. There are sources and install instructions at www.mandrakeusers.org 2002-12-14 16:23:39 7694
7765 Scorched 3D games -1 Dude While this game has some cute ideas, the UI (as previously noted) is more than a little unforgiving, and the combination of coarse graphics and a fixed isometric point of view makes it nearly impossible to tell where you're aiming, especially because the angle of the hill combines with the tilt of your barrel to affect your aim direction. The link was alive, though. 2002-12-14 16:33:36 0
