| 7569 | Kwirk's Quest | games | 4512 | Eventually... | First saw this about a year ago, but IIRC I couldn't quite be bothered to install Clanlib which it needs. Bah, another cross-platform programming library thing, etc etc. Well, with this recent release I figured I'd at least have a go.
Webpage says it wants 0.6 (although a note in the source mentions 0.5?), which is newer than the version Debian/stable has, so as nothing else I'm interested in uses Clanlib, I compiled it from source- which sadly refused to find Lua, though I seem to have the relevant packages. No matter, as Kwirk doesn't seem to need Lua anyway. A long time after, Clanlib is compiled and installed. 160MB! I like it less!
Anyway, Kwirk seemed to compile without any obvious problems, and I proceeded to (try to) play it. My earliest observations: (1)- Graphics are pretty but hard to see; (2)- UI is not great; (3)- It crashes a LOT. Sometimes it slows down to a crawl and I have to change to a VT to kill it.
Soon, figured that it mostly seems to be trying to use certain spells and items that causes the crashes- I think it's lightning, magic missile (?), and cutlass that have this effect. Around this time, I was also noticing how bad the UI for selecting stuff is- It's a reasonably good idea, the spinning icons, but they move FAR too quickly, and VANISH as soon as you stop moving them round. The circles rotate the opposite way round to how I'd expect, and also, if you are carrying lots of items, the circle doesn't even fit in the screen, so you don't see what you're doing (depends where you stand, too).
When you select a target to cast a spell at, you typically end up walking towards it as well (because you have to click on it); also, there's no clear way to cancel target selection (eg- accidentally select to cast the poisony spell when you're the only one on screen, you have to target yourself!); also, the "firing missiles in the direction you're facing" feature makes missiles very tough to use, but once I've picked up those blue or pink ball type missiles, I can only fire one of any other missile at a time anyway (the selection seems to go back to the ball missiles after one shot, even when carrying lots of hammers).
There was also the thing with the giant eye constantly changing into the lizardy thing and back again, neither of which I could kill. I was never quite sure whether they were 2 monsters stuck together or what.
I'll stop now as this is sounding really really negative, and I have to point out that the game does have a lot of promise, and is kind of playable (if you remember all the things you have to do to stop it crashing). If the author needs someone else to informally test for bugs (which may be due to different systems and setups) then I wouldn't mind- but if so, could he ask soon! I don't want to be wasting 160MB of my disk for no reason! | 2002-12-03 21:55:58 | 0 |

| 7571 | Atari800 | games | 5205 | Re: Yes!! | I am using the SDL target. The problem is that the special keys (START etc.) are mapped on normal keys. Now e.g. in Bounty Bob strikes back, at some point you have to press START together with another key to warp to a higher level. However, pressing two keys simultaneously isn't possible (unless one of them is a modifier key). In short, most probably you would have to change the key mapping of the emulator to use modifier keys for the Atari special keys. | 2002-12-04 05:06:36 | 7566 |

| 7574 | Atari800 | games | 6457 | Re: Yes!! | It should work. Console keys (START, OPTION, SELECT) can be pressed together. Please look in atari_sdl.c line 553. When you press F2 and F4 - there is OPTION and START activated.
Can you write simple Atari Basic program and test behaviour of console keys on your system?
PS. better mail me, it's not forum ;-) | 2002-12-04 06:53:57 | 7571 |
