| 7129 | GNU Robbo | games | -1 | Re: Great game! | Yeah, this was my favorite Atari game. It was made in Poland and so I think it was not sold out side of Europe. Besides the Atari in Europe was different than the one in US. | 2002-11-04 23:16:08 | 6899 |

| 7131 | TeamSpeak | games | -1 | This is cool! Are we entering a new era? | I mean, we are getting Unreal 2003, Doom 3, we _have_ quake 1, 2, 3 and the availability of all Q3 mods. And we have more in the works (cube, neverwinter..). Is linux finally booming in games?

When I installed Unreal 2003 demo both at work and at home, the installation went flawlessly. At work (mandrake 8.2), I got a graphical installer, and at home (Gentoo), I got a text based installer, but both worked flawlessly, and I thought, THIS is how games should install! Dead easy installation, and I got menu entries to launch the game immediately.

I think we are entering a new era. Linux was never as fun as it is now! :)

m0ns00n | 2002-11-05 01:27:37 | 0 |

| 7134 | TeamSpeak | games | 6453 | License? | I notice that this utility is closed source freeware. The license is similar to the FMOD license - free (as in beer) for non-comercial use. While this is fine for people that just want to run the utility in the background while playing multiplayer games under Linux, its SDK cannot be used by games that comply with the GPL license, that would like to incorporate voice communication, because of the requirement that the application is non-commercial. The GPL specifically states that the software must be free to sell. Sorry if this sounds like a rant or a critism of the software but I think it needs to be pointed out. GPLed games should only use SDKs/libraries that are compatible with the GPL. This is limited to licenses that are proper subsets of the GPL and includes the GPL, LGPL, BSD, public domain licenses and more. The HawkVoice API is a game oriented, multiplayer voice API released under the GNU LGPL, with support for Linux/Unix and Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000. It supports more codecs than this one too. HawkVoice is only suitable for game developers integrating it into their game, it does not have user-space utilities and I think it requires the developer to do the recording and playback themselves, it does the hard part - the compression and decompression. Most of these critisms only apply to the TeamSpeak SDK. There's nothing terribly wrong with using a closed source application. | 2002-11-05 04:27:31 | 0 |
