3050 news 5676 Re: Who the hell are any of you anyway? Actually it's not difficult to port a game to Linux IF it was designed to be portable from the outset. For example for a smaller project that was designed for portabilitiy it would not be unprobable that a ported version could be up and running in an afternoon. This would be possible through an understanding of the intended platforms from the outset and proper modularisation of the important major functions of the program i.e. graphics, sound and input. If done correctly just a few lines of code or even a flag could do it. 2002-11-03 14:45:54 7085
3050 news 5676 Sorry, spelling mistake above 'improbable' not 'unprobable' :s 2002-11-03 14:48:50 7091

3050 news -1 Re: You asked for the bullshit :-) They work fine here - we've got several machines running RH8.0 with nvidia drivers without problems. I've been, err, testing them, you see :) 2002-11-03 16:06:04 7087
3050 news -1 Re: OK, there's a bit of negatives here Hmm, I'm sceptical about "gcc problems" since the gnumeric debacle. In that several gnumeric people claimed that gnumeric had bugs introduced by the RH7.x compiler, and gnumeric's configuration file refused to compile under that compiler. <P>When Alan Cox looked into it, it turned out that 2 of the three "compiler bugs" were actual bugs in gnumeric (which made it give incorrect results on all platforms), and the third could be worked around with a one-line change. 2002-11-03 16:10:13 7080
3050 news -1 Re: I'm scared :s Tell me again, why should they take it seriously? This work is probably being done at a -huge- loss to Bioware -- they have to pay a bunch of developers, who could be working on other projects, to produce Linux binaries that only a handful of people (compared to the Windows user-base of the game, that is) will -ever- use. Ever. They're not going to see another million sales of the game because they added Linux support. If anything the most they'll see is a few thousand, which really isn't all that bad anyway, but most of them will be complaining about something. "Well the binaries STILL aren't on the CD." "Ooh, they're closed source..not that I ever look at the source for anything, but I feel magically entitled to it because I'm running Linux." Then there's the people that'll be trying to run the game on hardware that isn't supported well under Linux, they'll probably be complaining about Bioware rather than the kernel developers. So remind me again, please, I think this should be cleared up..why the hell should Bioware take a Linux client seriously? 2002-11-03 17:53:22 7063
3050 news -1 Re: Who the hell are any of you anyway? Oh, and you're a game developer too, I suppose..are you? If so I'm suprised you didn't take into account the fact that many operating systems provide different levels of abstraction for hardware, not to mention different levels of support. Debugging tools used for Windows in many cases aren't available under other operating systems, at least, not in the form they're used to (GDB isn't Soft-Ice, although it is an excellent debugger). Not to mention their staff has to either be already well versed in programming for all these other operating systems, and conditions, or they must be trained to do so, and paid to do so when they could be working on games for Windows that will, invariably, sell far better. I'm suprised you just didn't think of any of this, you know..that portability might actually have a lot to do with business and resources, rather than just good coding. I mean you are an expert, aren't you? 2002-11-03 17:58:05 7086
Emilia Pinball games -1 Way to go!!! :) In both senses of the phrase ;)<br> <br> Your game certainly looks promising and is a lot of fun already. <br> <br> I only had some minor issues with it (on the Tux table, OpenGL, linux 2.4.19, GForce 4...):<br> One is the ball-bouncing thing. The ball seemed a little sticky on the paddles, I thought. Maybe that's just me though.<br> The other is that some of the hilightable button thingies flickered considerably all the time. Those were the LINUX and the BOOT ones, so I assume it's those that are under transparent stuff...<br> <br> Well, for a 0.1.1 release, certainly very impressive. :)<br> <br> -- <br> GP_Spukgestalt, killed by an iron ball collision. 2002-11-03 18:53:15 0
