| 7078 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: OK, there's a bit of negatives here | the issue with red hat is not gcc, it's its heavily tweaked kernel. This tweaks are made for corporate clients yet end up in end user kernel. They do creates problems in A LOT OF programs. (you can see rh oriented patch everywhere) | 2002-11-03 04:16:37 | 7067 |
| 7080 | 3050 | news | 6198 | Re: OK, there's a bit of negatives here | Actually the problem probably is GCC as they use patched versions of it. Applications like MPlayer has always had problems with Redhat's versions of GCC. | 2002-11-03 05:45:51 | 7078 |
| 7082 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: You asked for the bullshit :-) | Interesting that they can say that when there aren't any 3D drivers for Red Hat 8....... | 2002-11-03 08:38:30 | 7077 |
| 7083 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: You asked for the bullshit :-) | with the NVidia Drivers you can compile them for yourself and should work fine with RH8. if your using a bleeding edge distro then you should alway expect minor problems. | 2002-11-03 09:21:09 | 7082 |
| 7084 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: You asked for the bullshit :-) | Check the nvidia discussion lists. Some people have reported success and posted instructions for src rpm's and tarballs. True, they haven't posted rh8.0 rpm's, but you can still install from the tarballs. Don't know about other cards. | 2002-11-03 09:23:11 | 7082 |
| 7085 | 3050 | news | -1 | Who the hell are any of you anyway? | Everyone one of you people bitching thing that having NWN is your god given right. Calm the hell down and maybe step outside for once. This is only a game. Bioware doesn't owe anyone anything until they purchase a game from them.
All this BS about hiring "competent" Linux developers is stupid. It just shows anyone that if they want to support Linux, then they're going to have to hire people who have a very intimate knowledge of Linux. So no point in developing ports for it as its going to take your developers months to learn its hard to use APIs so just use DirectX because its familiar.
Its no wonder no one wants to support Linux, it too hard to develop and support. | 2002-11-03 10:26:33 | 0 |
| 7086 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: Who the hell are any of you anyway? | That's totally BS. Anyone that is competent at programming knows that if you write a game to be portable from the start, tyhen it is butt-simple to port a game to ANY architecture/OS. These guys at Bioware optimized and wrote a game for Windows from the start. They had little intention on doing a fast and efficient port to Linux or MacOS, or else it would be done by now. Take a look at projects by small teams like PomPom and their port of Space Tripper and Mutant Storm. Or the guys that make Vendetta (Guild Software). They would tell you that you are full of it. | 2002-11-03 10:48:13 | 7085 |
| 7087 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: You asked for the bullshit :-) | You don't really "compile" the nVidia drivers. They are closed source. What you are doing is compiling specific parts that attatch to pre-compiled binaries, which is still unstable if you do it on a GCC 3.2 system. | 2002-11-03 10:50:13 | 7083 |
| 7088 | 3050 | news | -1 | Re: Who the hell are any of you anyway? | You know, it's not about what we, Linux gamers, feel we're entitiled to, it's about what Bioware promised us over and over for years until the release of the game. The mantra was: "Windows, Linux and Mac versions released simultaneously on the same CD!". Then at release it became "Linux client shortly afterward". Now here we are six months after release with no client in sight and pessimistic sounding status reports from the developer.
Where I come from, this is called "getting jerked around." What do you call it? | 2002-11-03 11:08:43 | 7085 |
