| 7010 | Slickworm | games | -1 | Re: slickworm |
Doesn't SDL do sound, too? SDL_mixer? I know of them, but haven't written code that links with them as yet.....

Libraries are great, but on the flipside, non-standard libraries (ie outside of say, 6 months old Red Hat) often have to be downloaded for source distributions. The more you have, the less likely people are to download them all and play your game. So.... think of either chucking ODE in with the distro (maybe 200k zipped up?) or doing a static binary release when you are ready for a non-developer audience.

Best of luck.
| 2002-10-29 07:34:21 | 6977 |
| 7012 | XPilot | games | -1 | Re: XPilot | idiot. it doesnt matter what the game LOOKS like, its how the game plays. There are ways to make it look prettier, but people prefer the fast vector graphics because thats all you need. Trim the ratings? your in a minority here bud, look how many other 5*s there are.. maybe you should learn the game, and learn it well THEN rate it! | 2002-10-29 12:44:54 | 168 |

A bad RPM, no doubt. | 2002-10-29 13:24:58 | 0 |

| 7016 | glAnts | games | 4512 | Early days | Hmm, on my K6-450 and MGA G400 based system, it ran quite acceptably. Not too slow, not too fast.
As for the game, well, I don't think I got it. Sure, you can shoot other robots ("ants"), and they can shoot you, and if you continue shooting an ant long enough, it might actually die before you do. But the ant- colony type stuff described didn't seem to happen. The docs talk about nests of them and them moving food about or something. No sign of that. Tried changing some of the settings in the .INI file, but didn't seem to make a difference. Maybe that part's not done yet.
On a bugs + playability side, well trying to switch to fullscreen makes it screw up- it grabs the mouse, then disappears (but continues running) - I have to change to the console and kill the process manually. That's bad. The settings screen is not clear or easy to use. When your own ant fires, the beams tend not to be visible. Using the 3rd person camera, you view at a skewed angle that makes it hard to aim at the enemy, and the camera often ends up on the other sides of walls. And as I mentioned earlier, the enemy ants take too much to kill.
But hey, looks like the author's only started fairly recently, so I'm sure things will improve, it doesn't seem like a bad start for now. | 2002-10-29 20:09:54 | 0 |

| 7018 | glAnts | games | -1 | I agree with previous comments | This thing seems quite well-done, despite some important parts seem to be still missing. But, this is not playable, or at least, it is not fun yet. I think keyboard control should be "softer", implementing at least a sort of acceleration. Also, the idea of using a complex collective AI like the ants' one is great, but I can't notice it in the game, too. My overall impression is that this game has potential, and needs only a bit of work more to start becoming fun. | 2002-10-29 23:58:51 | 0 |
