Rock Dodger | games | 6213 | My game! | I'm rating my game at three stars, because I can think of so many other things I want to add. <p> BTW you may have trouble adding comments to this game. I think there's a bug in happypenguin.org. Any program name which contains a space cannot be commented on. | 2002-07-29 02:23:49 | 0
Rock Dodger | games | 3 | Re: My game! | Hi pad,<br> Nice little game though my first match was over after about 30 seconds...<br> BTW: You and I did add comments, right? :) | 2002-07-29 05:52:28 | 6171
Rock Dodger | games | 6213 | Re: My game! | Looks like you can add comments with a single click, as long as you are replying to an existing comment! <p> ... or did you mean... did I comment my code? <p> Some of the comments in the code are in rastafarian, but the majority are in English. Sometimes I take a whole paragraph to explain one little game mechanic, and othertimes there is a string of fifty uninterrupted assignment statements ina row without a single comment. | 2002-07-29 06:22:16 | 6172
Rock Dodger | games | 6213 | Re: My game! | 30 seconds - that's about right for a first game. The game lots a lot of marks in the nostarch SDL competition because it was too hard, although the beauty of writing a game non-commercially is that you cantailor it to your own personal skill levels. I knew all the tricks, of course, and if I wanted any more, I could just write them in. <p> Another thing I learned when writing my own games is that they have to be carefully tuned. It's very easy to make a game impossible or boring, it's very hard to get the game to hit that spot which we call "fun". <p> On another note - I have received praise for writing a completely original game which does not copy any other commercial game currently extant. Would anyone say this is a problem with open-source games? Most of them <i>are</i> implementations or play-alikes of commercial games - could this be seen as a weakness? | 2002-07-29 06:28:26 | 6172
Cube | games | -1 | Re: License? | Something wrong with the old BSD license? Why does it have to be a "new" BSD license? And furthermore, I am puzzled, why not GPL or LGPL? What are the benefits in BSD license? | 2002-07-29 09:59:33 | 5238
Atlantik | games | 452 | Almost there... I guess | I'd love to be able to rate this game. However, there are no docs with the distribution of either atlantik or monopd. So I can't figure out how to start a game (starting monopd in one term and atlantik in another doesn't seem to allow the creation of a new game). But the screenshots look great! | 2002-07-29 11:45:49 | 0
Rock Dodger | games | 6138 | Re: My game! | IMHO there's nothing bad in cloning or taking suggestion from previous commercial games. A game is fun if it's fun, not if it's original. If it's also original, it's a great thing, but it's extremely difficult to achieve originality, expecially in arcade games. | 2002-07-29 11:54:42 | 6174
Wok | games | 6138 | original and nice. | only 3 stars because I don't feel itvery funny nor very playable. Graphics and sound are great and extremely original, though, as well as general game immersion. | 2002-07-29 11:58:23 | 0
