| 5990 | 2650 | news | -1 | Re: What is "Intent"? |
>it really was a decent machine.

It certainly was. The clock speed was a little low but it was a completely different architecture which made up for it.

>but you still can't do horizontal hardware scroliing on nearly all PC gfx cards!!!

That is true but at least it can be done with blitting. It is not as elegant as simply changing a single dword to shift the entire screen but more flexible.

>Also the Amiga could take a single colour, and split it into hundreds of colours, as long as they were used on different scanlines...

Yeah, that was so great and it could even change resolution on different scan lines. Useful for a lores main game screen (lots of FPS) and a hires panel at the bottom or some other combination.

I think the fate of Amiga goes to show the power of open source, btw. If AmigaOS had been GPL, lots of semi religious developers would have improved it after Amiga was sold.

I suspect I will stick with Linux for a long time because of that. At least the OS will not suddenly die just because of a bankruptcy, and both KDE and GNOME have pretty nice interfaces compared to Win32 and COM.

This is hugely off topic but I have a question I was wondering whether anyone could answer.
I cannot tell which 3d library is "the most" efficient on Linux. With Windows I would have used Direct3D but there seems to be multiple choices with Linux and I do not want to put too much effort into one of them just to risk finding out that the speed will be subpar no matter what I do. Which libraries are used in most 3d games?

Again, sorry for the long off topic posts. I usually do not post off topic.
| 2002-07-10 12:40:50 | 5989 |
| 5991 | OpenGL Racing Game | games | 21 | Nice | Nice graphics, sound, decent gameplay. Very promising. It would be nice if levels could be completed though. | 2002-07-10 13:49:50 | 0 |
| 5992 | 2650 | news | 6051 | Re: What is "Intent"? | I would use OpenGL. It may not be fastest if you just use any old routine, but with the list routines (DrawElements or something like that) its real fast. ID Software used it for Quake 3 on Linux, so thats good enough for me. | 2002-07-10 15:27:51 | 5990 |
| 5993 | gljewels | games | 21 | Very nice game. | Highly addictive. Pleasant graphics and sound. Excellent game play. | 2002-07-10 16:49:45 | 0 |
| 5994 | Crack Attack! | games | 21 | Very Nice. | Excellent game. Fractactular graphics. Highly Addictive. Only reason it doesn't get 5 is because I think gljewel has more balanced game play. | 2002-07-10 16:51:32 | 0 |
| 5995 | Phobia III | games | 6073 | so sweet.. | This almost ought to be called the starship troopers game. Fireing down aliens by the hundreds seems weird and boring at first, but the game is really an exercise in tactical retreats :) and you DO need more than firepower to beat it... 90Megs is a lot, but the game is loaded with athmosphere and gameplay, so if you have a fair connection its worth the wait. | 2002-07-11 00:18:38 | 0 |
| 5996 | 2650 | news | -1 | Re: 3d Libraries | There are some 3d Libraries based on OpenGL and using SDL in http://www.libsdl.org/libraries.php .
For example, if you want a Quake like game, Cube can be a good library.

Anyway, I don't know anything about 3d graphics, but most games uses SDL together with OpenGL.

Tuxkart and tuxahfq use plib and OpenGL.

There is a good generic book called Programming Linux Games by Loki, that I bought from tuxgames: http://www.tuxgames.com/details.cgi?gameref=80&id=170752&nc=1026382578 and it talks about 2d (SDL), 3d (OpenGL and SDL) and sound (OpenAl). I think it has a year or two, but it stills is quite update. | 2002-07-11 03:18:09 | 5992 |
| 5997 | Craft | games | -1 | Great game but it crashes | This is a really great game, I like to play it! The only problem is it crashes after some time. Most often, this game finishes with a core dump. And yes, I did apply the patches ... | 2002-07-11 05:06:39 | 0 |
| 5998 | OpenGL Racing Game | games | 5205 | Nice start | Nothing playable yet, but it looks very nice. Needs now work on the gameplay. Currently you can even fly 'beyond the horizon' :-)
Pit | 2002-07-11 05:20:21 | 0 |
| 5999 | 2650 | news | -1 | Re: What is "Intent"? | > Speedwise, for games, the popular Amiga 500 was IMHO roughly comparable to a fast Pentium or slow Pentium II with a decent graphics card
Well, I'd rather say fast 486 / slow Pentium w/ a VGA card... | 2002-07-11 06:18:31 | 5987 |
