| 5756 | PlaneShift | games | 4512 | Browsers and Flash(OT) | (Off topic)-
Last times I tried to download and compile a version of Mozilla, the compilation ate well over a gigabyte. That's obscene. IIRC, the time before that, the compile simply failed, and the error was utterly intractable due to the morass of weird "stub files" and headers all pointing this way and that. I'd never seen anything like it. That was a "Milestone" version, not an unstable CVS version. Of course, Mozilla recently hit 1.0, but even if the bugs have gone, I doubt the binary+associated libraries will have shrunk below 20MB or so.
I currently use various browsers, one that I use a lot is "Dillo". It doesn't support anything very fancy, doesn't do Java or Javascript, but it is incredibly fast, and the binary is about 1MB. Previous versions were around 300K. The compile tree comes to about 9MB, that's even less than 1% of that of Mozilla.
Having said that, the newer version of Konqueror (which I recently upgraded) can now use the Netscape plugin for Flash.... but of course, one good reason why I'm not so willing to put Flash on my system is that apart from being proprietary and closed source (except for the free versions that exist), it is a security threat. Arbitrary scripts, anyone? I'm certainly not suggesting the Planeshift guys would take advantage of that, but it's something to bear in mind before installing your next Must-Have black-box software. Sure, Wiindows people put up with it, but they put up with Windows too. | 2002-06-13 18:23:12 | 5698 |
| 5757 | PlaneShift | games | 4512 | Re: Some additional info | I'm all for GPL and free software, but I don't think restricive licenses on artwork stop it being open source in the slightest, and I don't think it's really an issue. But, it does look like that license would stop anyone from redistributing the artwork data, for any reason- including as part of a Linux distro. | 2002-06-13 18:34:15 | 5750 |

| 5764 | PlaneShift | games | 4512 | Re: Grumble... | There's various things that I personally don't like about C++- but no, not all supposedly portable C++ code works in various g++ versions. I hear that the 3.0 versions of g++ are better in this respect, but 99% of software I install or write (true, I don't write much) is plain C, and I'd rather not be using 3.0 for that.
FWIW, I did itry installing latest stable Crystal Space last night, it did compile, and mostly works well. Some very impressive features, well done, etc. So no, I'm not so anti-CS anymore (I didn't really dislike it that much before, I should say), and look forward to seeing future stuff- but I still don't like C++, too many bad experiences of it, and that's unlikely to change.
I'm not going to argue this any more here, tho, this is meant to be a page about Planeshift, after all! Apologies to all for going so OT. | 2002-06-14 18:10:05 | 5759 |
| 5765 | PlaneShift | games | 4512 | Download? | Right, OK, I would like to actually try D/Ling this now, but all that I can find on the site anywhere is a load of RPMs, which are no use to me.
As the software is supposed to be GPL, there ought to be some source code somewhere, preferably in a more portable format such as tgz or some such, but the "Download source" page just says "under construction"...
Are the sources available anywhere else? Also, the download page has packages of Crystal Space and the CEL thing, does it currently need modified or unstable versions?
Having seen a few more screenshots of this thing, I'm really wanting to give it a try, but issues like this aren't making things easy! | 2002-06-14 18:21:53 | 0 |
| 5766 | JJFFE - Frontier 2 for Linux | games | 6030 | Truly Amazing Game | In the beginning there was Elite. That was fun. Then came Frontier-elite 2. And all the people who liked elite enjoyed that also. Then cam First Encounters on the Frontier (aka Elite 3). And the game was terrible. It had too many bugs, an unfinished plot, and thousands of other problems which rendered it virtually unplayable. JJ changed all that, and it now beats the previous 2. If you have ever enjoyed a trading sim, this is a must get. If you have ever enjoyed a space-combat sim, this is a must get. So get it. | 2002-06-14 22:38:39 | 0 |
