| 4575 | Racer | games | -1 | Racer | One good thing about gpl is your code can't be used in someone elses commercial application, am I right. The game seems nice though, I just can't figure out is why are the sources around for all to steal if they are not open or gpl... Well, maybe the author knows better... -JL- | 2002-01-23 01:57:13 | 0 |
| 4576 | Racer | games | -1 | Racer | Forgot my password, so I'm posting anon, sorry. I've read the thread about the GPL and it seems to me that beyond the choice of the author there are some serious misunderstandings about HOW the GPL works. In particular, it does not prevent AT ALL the possibility of gettind paid if the engine is used in a commercial product, quite the opposite. A GPLd program means that any derived work (= uses part of the source or links to its object files) when distributed in binay format MUST also provide the source, under the GPL. As you can easily see, this is very much incompatible with a commercial game, for which distributing the source is a no-no. Anyway, since you retain the copyright to your work (if multiple authors, everyone retains copyright on his part), you can RELICENSE the code to someone with a different license. For example, you can provide the source under a BSD license (=allows distribution of binary without source) in exchange for $5000 or whatever. You'll probably want to include a non-redistribution clause in that license. The GPL has also anothe advantage: it's a well know license, written by people who know what they're doing and if breached you'll find support and help in fighting your case. Don't forget that whatever you write on your code as a license, it'll be effective only if you can enforce it (= pay a lawyer and have the license be "strong" from a legal point of view). GPL helps this. On the downside, if you GPL you cannot prevent people from creating a derivative of racer and distribute it (always under the GPL). Of course, they'll not be able to "sell" it via relicensing, since you still hold the copyright to the base they used. I don't think this is a big problem: if tomorrow I start distributing "racer 2" derived from your code, are you willing to go to court and throw lots of money and time away? Don't forget that, contrary to the case where a big company "steals" the code, you'll not be able to obtain much compensation from an individual, so it'll probably not be worth the effort. The GPL will not change this, except providing friends on your side willing to spread the word and boycott the "clone" project. Ok, hope this helps clear things up. I've downloaded the thing and I'll try it, now :) | 2002-01-23 04:21:56 | 0 |
