<em>Description:</em> Lords of Midnight was an epic adventure game written for the ZX Spectrum
microcomputer (amongst others) in the early 1980's. It differed from
other games due to the technique known as landscaping which allowed a the player to view the world, panoramically, from any location. Also, the player could control multiple characters, allowing for complex strategies with radically different, open-ended scenarios. Using his landscaping technique, Mike Singleton was able to develop a game which offered no less than 31,232 views, from about 3904 locations, which was no mean feat on a 48K spectrum. Despite being an 8-bit game, it is still extremely playable, highly addictive and exhibit surprisingly passable graphics.

The PowerPak is my attempt to create a high-level gaming API for Linux. Right now the code is very slow as I am just trying to get all the functions that I want to write written. I would greatly appreciate any help I could get with optimization as I think this is a worthy project. It uses the SDL library and includes functions for not only for loading of sprites from various image formats and drawing/animating sprites but also rotating, flipping, shearing, etc.

There's more tutorial action happening over at the <a href="http://sunsite.auc.dk/linuxgames">Linux Game Development Center</a>. In tonight's episode, Alexandre Courbot walks you through a simple graphics program first using SVGAlib and then GGI. In the second half, he tenderly explains how to write a simple PCX viewer. Don't miss this very special <a href="http://sunsite.auc.dk/linuxgames/tutorials/courbot_col2a.html">LGDC graphics tutorial</a>. |

<a href="/images/myth2-menu.jpg"><img src="/images/thumbs/myth2-menu.jpg" align=right width=200 height=150></a>On Tuesday, June 29, you can listen to <a href="http://www.lokigames.com">Loki</a> dudes Scott Draeker, Sam Latinga, and Michael Vance talking live on <a href="http://www.ttalk.com">TTalk.com's</a> <a href="http://www.ttalk.com/shows/thelinuxshow/thelinuxshow.shtml">The Linux Show</a>. More details about the show are available <a href="http://www.lokigames.com">on Loki's news page</a>.
<p>
In other Loki news, the third beta of <em>Myth II:Soulblighter</em> has been released to us beta testers, along with a nice new GTK-based installer program. The game now runs flawlessly on my system, save for a small, non-critical graphics glitch that I'm sure will be cleared up soon. The final product will be as stable and high-quality a product as <a href="/show?Civilization%3A%20Call%20To%20Power">Civ:CTP</a> is. IMHO though, this will be a much better game. <em>Myth II</em> just plain kicks ass as a realtime strategy game for any platform. |

<a href="/images/psi-theta.jpg"><img src="/images/thumbs/psi-theta.jpg" align=right width=200 height=140></a><a href="mailto:Nectioch@earthlink.net">Christopher Dittrick</a> has begun a new space strategy/simulation game called <em>Psi Theta Seven</em>. He says:
<blockquote>
Psi Theta Seven is a game that will contain elements of Sim City, Outpost, and Alien Legacy. Although the game is still in early Alpha, there is code available to check out. A playable release will be complete in about a month.

<a href="mailto:steffen.kremser@danet.de">Steffen Kremser</a> wrote in with some news about the <a href="http://www.parsec.org">Parsec</a> team demo'ing their game at <a href="http://www.linuxtag.org">LinuxTag '99</a> in Germany this past weekend. There's a bit of new detail here, but mostly it's nice to hear that this eagerly anticipated game is actually at a playable stage. Here are Steffen's reactions:
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>using "off the shelf" Celeron 400/Voodoo2 boxen
<li>they ran a 4-player network game (peer-to-peer networking) (The first public version (later this year) might already be split into dedicated client and server progams for ~16 players.)
<li>playability is good
<li>visual quality/rendering speed is amazing
<li>audio effects are nice
<li>really cool background music (see www.parsec.org for a few mp3's)
<li>my favourite visual effects
<ul>
<li>the "helix cannon"
<li>new players "gating in"
<li>lens reflections (?) when the "sun" is in the right angle
<li>"smoke ring" when ship explodes (best seen from a distance)
</ul>
</ul>
I'll definitely get a copy once they go public.
(even if i'll have to find someone to play with ;-)
</blockquote>
Thanks, Steffen! |
