377 2 1999-06-13 12:18:55 I've just spent the last six or so hours playing Loki Entertainment Software's Linux port of Myth II: Soulblighter. Because the game is still beta quality, I had some problems, but mostly I had lots of fun. If Loki polishes this product as much as they did Civ:CTP prior to its release (and I'm sure they will), this will be one kick-ass game.
Myth II is a realtime strategy game in which you control armies of knights, archers, sorcerers and others in order to defeat the hordes of undead that are sweeping across your land. The graphics as rendered by my Voodoo2 card are absolutely beautiful. Fog effects, rippling reflective water and detailed, colorful textures make this one of the best looking things on my Linux system right now (right behind my vast collection of porn). If you don't have a 3D accelerator, fear not: Myth II has a software rendering mode as well. I can't comment on its quality at this time however, as there's some kind of color bug that makes all non-3Dfx graphics in the game look butt ugly on my system.
You'll need a 133MHz Pentium, 32 MB of RAM, and 450 MB of free hard drive space to run Myth II. If you want it to run well, you should probably have at least a Pentium 200, 64 MB RAM, and a Voodoo2-based 3D accelerator.
The screenshots adorning this article are fakes. Or rather, I didn't make them. I swiped them from Bungie's Myth II page. It's unclear right now if you can take screenshots from within Myth II, so these will have to do. You can take my word for it that the Linux version looks just like these.
If the studs at Loki can eradicate the remaining bugs and if Barney or the Precious Moments kids don't suddenly make an appearance in one of the later missions, I think Myth II:Soulblighter has a good chance of becoming one of the best games for Linux yet. Myth II: Soulblighter first look default

383 -1 1999-06-13 21:02:57 Category: Game-related Utility
Description: GameStalker makes use of a client server model when searching for games. A zpdb (Zero-ping Database) server keeps a constantly refreshed list of Q2 and Q3A servers. GameStalker queries against this constantly refreshed list of servers to find the games you want to play in.
One of the reasons traditional server browsers take so long to refresh is because they are calculating the almighty ping for every server in the list, even though there are thousands of them you will never play on.
Many people, while concerned with ping, have other priorities, at least initially. For instance, you may want to just find a friend or clan member, or a particular game (lithium, wf, etc). This is where GameStalker can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes you to find these games. Queries against the zpdb take only a few seconds instead of several minutes.
