You start the game in 1492 with a vessel and some colonists. The goal is to build many colonies (with the help of Europe) so that you can live off the land after a while. Once the majority of the people are behind you, you can declare your independence. The King will then send over his forces from Europe and try to gain control over your colonies. If you survive the attack you've won the game. | FreeCol 0.1.0 | new | FreeCol |

Telemachos said that although their project has the blessing of Richard "Lord British" Garriot, the founder of the Ultima series, they've been unable to communicate meaningfully with Electronic Arts, who own the Ultima franchise. In order to prevent EA from shutting them down after the game is released, the development team chose to abandon the Ultima theme and create an original game instead.
When asked if Era will continue the Linux support that U1:ALR had, Telemachos responded,
All that has changed is the name - Era will support Linux just as Ultima 1 did.
...
Our release order for tech3 will be first Windows, then Linux (hopefully not too long after the Win32 version but this depends on how quickly we get a decent shader support for openGL)...

The impressive tech demo 2 for Ultima I:A Legend Reborn is still available. It's certainly worth a look if you haven't yet seen it.
(thanks, Trick!) | Ultima 1:A Legend Reborn is dead. Long Live Era:The Arken-Throne. | updated | Ultima I: A Legend Is Reborn |
