| 3061 | 3 | 2002-11-06 03:33:21 | Bill Kendrick wrote in to share these exciting news with us:
VA folks have started a game company called Damage Studios. The company currently consists of DiBona, SourceForge.net co-founder Anthony Guntharp and VA veteran Steve Westmoreland:

"Damage Studios today announces its incorporation and its plans to develop Rekonstruction, the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that will support over 1,000,000 concurrent users. In Rekonstruction, players will repopulate and rebuild the earth -- physically, economically and politically. The release of Rekonstruction is planned for Fall 2004."
Read the full story on Yahoo Finance.

"Why would a bunch of Linux server geeks start a game company?", Wired.com asks.
"For massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMPORGs), the limitations are at the back end," DiBona said. "If you look at EverQuest, you can only have 100,000 people at once, and they can't all interact with each other. Daly City (California, a San Francisco suburb) has that many people. We want to have millions of people at once interacting with each other."
There also is an interesting interview with DiBona on HomeLAN about Damage Studios and Rekonstruction.
While I couldn't find the magic L-word on any of the sites mentioned above, it would greatly surprise me if a "bunch of Linux server geeks" developed this game without Linux support. | Rekonstruction(TM) begins | default
| 3062 | 2 | 2002-11-06 08:47:51 | For two and a half years, the Linux Game Tome has been generously hosted by VA Software. VA is discontinuing all hosting not related to VA business, so this weekend we're moving to a new host provided by the lovely folks at Penguin Computing.
The new host is up now at test.happypenguin.org. You're all invited to visit and stress-test the new system. Be aware that anything you post there will vanish when the site goes live. | Happypenguin.org is moving | default
