292 2 1999-05-12 16:28:02 A debate with ferocity rivalling that of the GNOME vs KDE wars (ok, not that bad) is raging on the Tux: A Quest For Herring mailing lists.

What should Tux's girlfriend look like?

The flames are flying fast and hard (well, no they're not, but it's more interesting if I portray it that way), but so far the debaters have managed to agree that

she should be a penguin
she'll be named "Gown" (Tux & Gown, get it?)
she should appeal to female game players since she'll be a playable character - not just someone to be rescued. Are there any geek grrls out there who wanna lend an opinion?
she needs to be physically similar enough to Tux in order that she can perform the same game actions. i.e. she can't be a lot taller than Tux or she won't fit through doorways.
The idea of an all pink version of Tux has been tried and discarded, as has this Minnie Mouse-ish attempt by Steve Baker.
If you've got an idea about how Tux's female counterpart should look, read this first, then send a picture of your idea to Steve Baker. 295 2 1999-05-13 09:52:17 As if you needed it, here's further proof that Carmack is The Man:
May 1999 - John Carmack of id Software, Inc. has made a donation of US$10,000 to the Mesa project to support its continuing development. Mesa is a free implementation of the OpenGL 3D graphics library and id's newest game, Quake 3 Arena, will use Mesa as the 3D renderer on Linux.
The donation will go to Keith Whitwell, who has been optimizing Mesa to improve performance on 3d hardware. Thanks to Keith's work, many applications using Mesa 3.1 will see a dramatic performance increase over Mesa 3.0. The donation will allow Keith to continue working on Mesa full time for some time to come.
For more information about Mesa see www.mesa3d.org. 297 2 1999-05-13 20:03:46 At E3 today, Macmillan Computer Publishing announced Quake: The Offering and Quake II: Colossus for Linux. These are the game + mission pack bundles that were alluded to in somebody's .plan update awhile back. Each product will contain the full game and both mission packs for that game. The games will install via RPM (or rpm2cpio for non-rpm systems), so getting Linux Quake up and running quickly will become a whole lot easier! And we'll also finally have a glibc version of Quake 1! This is very cool. I've heard unofficially that these products should be on store shelves at the end of the month.
The full text of the press release is available here. 298 2 1999-05-17 00:31:55 Mysterious and as-yet unexplained network problems prevented all connectivity between my ISP's network and the network that the Game Tome server resides on for most of this weekend. The end result for many people was that you were shown linuxquake.com webpages when you wanted to see happypenguin.org pages. The end result for me was that I wasn't able to get to the server to do any updates.
Hopefully, the problem's over now, and I apologize to anyone who's been jonesing for updates during the past couple of days. I hate it when that happens default
