There are a huge amount of items and monsters and there are so many tricks you have to use to even survive the first levels. I advice you to get the spoilers from the Nethack pages. Some tricks you might learn and show you how deep this game is: Train your pet to steal in shops. Look at your pet, it never steps on cursed items if there is an other way around. You can't rost away cursed items but succubi can remove them. Did you ever had a pet dragon? You will never have problems with shopkeepers because they simply got eaten. Never go swimming.
