282 2 1999-05-09 20:54:09 Category: Code Library
Description: The contents of PLIB are:

GUI Widgets - A fully portable GUI interface that needs only GLUT, OpenGL and C++.
Sound Replay - A fully portable Audio driver suited to C++, GLUT and realtime applications that need low latency.
Matrix/Vector math - A set of matrix and vector math functions that was specifically written to simplify the writing of efficient OpenGL programs. You need to include this code into any SSG applications.
Scene Graph - A scene graph library layered on top of OpenGL.
Joystick - Supports more Joysticks with more axes and buttons than GLUT.
Fonts/Text - Supports text output in OpenGL using texture mapped fonts. These are much faster to render than GLUT's fonts.
Most of these work well under all flavors of Win32 (WinNT, Win95 and Win98), as well as under Linux and a number of other UNIX-like systems. Support for MacOS and BeOS is difficult - for some reason, people who are prepared to help out with porting some of these libraries are hard to find in the case of MacOS and BeOS. PLib 1.0.8 new
283 2 1999-05-09 22:16:44 id Software's Graeme Devine said in a .plan update tonight that the next Q3Test update (and the initial release for win32) probably won't occur until sometime tomorrow:
We're getting closer, but I think it'll be tomorrow before we're out.
Internally we're bashing on the new maps, code, servers, and clients. There is a /lot/ of new stuff in there and we want to bang on it for a bit before we release.
We are building installers, pak files, and so forth, so our confidence level is good, but since it's only been 15 minutes since the last bug fix (which was a doozy of a find BTW) and the new maps are still being bsp'd. All of this makes a release tonight seem like a bit of a risk.
If all goes well we will bash on it tonight and tomorrow, and once John gets in tomorrow we'll be ready to go.
No Q3Test update tonight default

288 2 1999-05-11 11:41:37

There's a beta power search interface to the Game Tome database available now. It's pretty complete, except I still have to add a way for you to order the search results, which are currently always sorted by the game title. Also, if anyone has an idea for simplifying the interface without sacrificing features, I'd love to hear it.
As you may have noticed, I've added some navigation links to the search result/listing pages to make it a little easier to get around quickly.
You don't have to have a Game Tome account to add or update games any more. Accounts are now only necessary to rate games and customize the news page.
Game authors: wanna get more dates? Put a Game Tome rating button on your web page for an instant increase in your personal magnetism! Chicks dig 'em!

As always, I'm open to suggestions for improvements to these and other parts of happypenguin.org. Stay tuned for more updates. 289 2 1999-05-11 11:40:32 In John Carmack's latest .plan update, he offers a $100US bounty to anyone who can repeatedly hang or crash their q3test server crashtest.idsoftware.com. This is an attempt to prevent the kind of lameness that occurred shortly after the release of Quake 2, where script kiddiez launched denial-of-service attacks on huge numbers of public Q2 servers. One prize has already been awarded. Crash id's q3test server, win 100 bucks default

291 2 1999-05-12 11:47:46 Cool! Loki Software comes through on their promise to support free software and release the fruits of their game porting efforts! Yay Loki!
Category: Code Library
Description: Video playback is based on the ubiquitous Berkeley MPEG player, mpeg_play v2.2. Audio is played through a slightly modified mpegsound library, part of Splay v0.8.2.
This library is distributed under the Gnu Library Public License (LGPL) version 2. In addition to the terms and conditions of the LGPL, we require that SMPEG only be distributed with the following legend in the documentation: "This product includes code from the Berkeley MPEG1 Software-only Video Decoder."
LokiTV and smplay are simple video players provided to test the library. The library interface is 'documented' in SDL_mpeg.h.
This is a work in progress. Only 16 bit color depth is supported. On slower systems performance is less than spectacular with choppy video and broken audio. Currently it has only been tested on Linux (i386, ppc, & alpha). Loki SDL MPEG Library 0.1.0 new
