A cute pop-cow for your desktop |
<p>xcowsay is a graphical configurable talking cow. It's a GTK+ version of the classic cowsay Perl script. It displays a cute pop-up cow on your desktop with a speech bubble and some customizable text. It comes with a fortune(6) wrapper script, xcowfortune, which you can cron to deliver periodic fortune cookies via the cow. It even has a daemon mode that lets you send the cow's messages over DBus.</p> |

xdesktopwaves is a cellular automata setting the background of your X Windows desktop under water. Windows and mouse are like ships on the sea. Each movement of these ends up in moving water waves. You can even have rain and/or storm stirring up the water.

XDigger is another Boulderdash clone---collect diamonds while digging through earth and avoiding falling rocks. The graphics are a bit painful to look at, however. If you like this sort of game, take a look at <a href="/show?Rocks%20%27n%27%20Diamonds">Rocks 'n' Diamonds</a> as well. |

<p>Xdriller is a portable Puzzle/Arcade video game. Xdriller is based on the gameplay of the Mr. Driller series, where you have to drill through Tetris-like screens of blocks and collect power-ups while avoiding being squashed by falling blocks.
<p>Xdriller is an open source project developed by me, durmieu. This is a part time hobby done in my spare time to learn how to create all the bits that make a game (models, graphics, music, code...) and put them together in something that works.
<p>The game features Tux and other characters. Characters, levels and other objects are modelled and textured using Blender, The Gimp and other open source tools.
<p>Although Linux is the main development environment, the game also compiles under Windows. I tried to keep the dependencies low and the libraries used are portable: Ogre3d for the graphics, OIS for input and SDL_mixer for sound. A Mac OS X port might be possible and is in the to-do list but I have no access to a OS-X computer with 3D acceleration to try to port it. Another great feature included lately is localization support, witch is managed by Gettext. |

Put a view of the earth from space in your root window. Xearth displays a beautifully shaded model of the earth in the root window, and updates it every few minutes to show the position of the sun relative to the earth. Settable options include orthographic or mercator projections, marking locations of interest, and adjusting the viewpoint. The web page has examples of what xearth can do, including a few more screenshots. |

Xemeraldia is a falling blocks game from the FreeBSD camp. Although it looks like Tetris, it's not---and figuring out how to make blocks go away is half the fun. Suffice it to say that it's possible to set up fairly nifty chain reactions where blocks of the same color first get cracked and then collapse into dust.
