252 2 1999-04-29 10:12:12 The 5th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition is under way. If you're interested in competing, judging or volunteering, visit the official web site at www.textfire.com, or contact this year's organizer, Stephen Granade.
Interactive Fiction is a high-falutin' phrase for text adventure (although some of them sport graphics now, too). For you young'uns who weren't yet born while Infocom was still king of computer games: In Interactive Fiction, you move around in a world described to you in prose on your screen. You type commands in plain English to perform actions in that world. "TAKE THE TURNIP FROM THE DWARF", or "TALK TO THE SMELLY HOOKER", for example. Like a good book, a well-written adventure can make you forget you're just interacting with text. I have visual memories of the places I've visited in Zork and Leather Goddesses of Phobos.
This is good stuff. It can be a great change of pace when you're all jiggy from 3d-accelerated first-person carnage overload. Naturally, there are Linux versions of all the popular interpreters. Check out this page for lots more information about Interactive Fiction. 5th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition default

254 2 1999-04-29 10:03:26 The Freeciv website has been moved to a new host, so hopefully this is the end of all the problems that have been plaguing the site for the last many weeks/months. Once again http://www.freeciv.org works as advertised. And it's faster than before, too! If you previously bookmarked weird addresses like freesite.ultraviolet.org or an IP address, don't forget to change these back. www.freeciv.org lives again! default
