| 2441 | Lopan | games | 3493 | Lopan | I agree with the poster below. Activision do not appear to be claiming that the author has infringed any of their intellectual property other than their trademark. They are obliged by trademark law to defent their trademark in this way. If you remove any reference to their trademark, then I think they will have very little to go on, though they may not be happy. | 2000-05-18 03:33:46 | 0 |
| 2442 | Lopan | games | 3590 | Lopan | They missed out on "prior art" by about 3000 years. Feed the text in it to the jive or redneck scrambler and call it "Slanghai"? | 2000-05-18 03:43:31 | 0 |
| 2443 | SHCAR | games | 3590 | SHCAR | Thinking about the postscript web server, this, and numerous similar things, I conclude that we now have waaaaay too much CPU horsepower and waaaaay too much spare time. | 2000-05-18 03:45:46 | 0 |
| 2444 | SHCAR | games | -1 | SHCAR | The Quake killer has finally arrived. Rumour has it joystick support is on the way. -Cut, Paste, Chmod +x and GO! | 2000-05-18 07:20:07 | 0 |
| 2445 | Lopan | games | -1 | Lopan | Just pointing out the fact: The author didn't just use "shangai" which would violaite the copyright. So by labeling his game "SDL Shanghai", it doesn't violaite the copyright, right? | 2000-05-18 08:10:35 | 0 |
| 2446 | SHCAR | games | -1 | SHCAR | Wow, great game! This is by far the best racing game I have found so far. Now if networking were added... | 2000-05-18 08:19:10 | 0 |
| 2447 | Lopan | games | -1 | Lopan | The ritualistic spouting about 'derivative works' might be a problem, though you may be able to get around that by declaring it to be a 'derivative work of the 3000 year old Mahjong [I don't know how to spell it, either] game' rather than mentioning 'Shanghai'. Personally, I REALLY think companies need to put a leash on their rather belligerent legal departments... | 2000-05-18 17:20:04 | 0 |
| 2448 | Lopan | games | -1 | Lopan |
There are a couple of issues and behavours in this that I don't find `very smart'.

I'm not much of a board game fan but I do support more games for Linux. However I really don't think it is very much contributive to write another board game (game of puzzle) dirived from an existing one.

The letter from Activision was rude, immature, very unprofesional, and not to mention dumb as a rock. Activision should have just offered to buy the port over. I always prefer `win and happy' situations over `win and boycott rude company' situations.

Not a `smart move' (no pun intended) on Activision's part in my opinion. But I also think the author should write a more original game.
| 2000-05-19 02:43:49 | 0 |
| 2449 | SHCAR | games | -1 | SHCAR | Sound support and better graphics is on the way. I am ivestigating the joystick support too. Stay tunned for 2.0! | 2000-05-19 03:26:56 | 0 |
| 2450 | Lopan | games | -1 | Lopan | I think the game should be called "SDL Mahjong" (sp?). | 2000-05-19 06:43:20 | 0 |
