Description: SDL is a library that allows you portable low level access to a video framebuffer, audio output, mouse, and keyboard. Cross-platform libraries have been written before, but SDL has a few
bells and whistles:

Completely crossplatform, supported on:

Linux (x86, Sparc, PPC, Alpha)

Solaris (Sparc)

Win32 ('95,'98,'NT)

BeOS (x86, PPC)

Mac PPC -- in development

Both simple and feature enabled -- the API is clean and easy to use.

Commercial application ready -- See the download page for projects.
Multi-threaded for asynchronous audio streaming.

Nelson Rush reports that the Altima Project is changing its name to WorldForge, which sounds to me more like a Quake level editor than an online RPG. Oh well. With a name like happypenguin, I guess I can't say too much about dorky names. |

Description: Rather than those trendy colored pixels that are all rage with the kids these days, Textmode Quake uses plain text characters for its rendering. The graphics-challenged need not feel left out any longer. Play Quake at a text
terminal, in an xterm, or over a telnet session!
BZ:Uh oh, my past is coming back to haunt me...

There's a new beta engine demo of The Guild available. The Guild is a 3D rendered, first-person science fiction adventure, a la Myst. It's still under development and this release is just an engine test, not a full game. Still, previous releases have looked pretty nice. If you've got a moment, check it out and give the authors some feedback. |

As you're probably already aware, Valve Software is putting the finishing touches on a Half-Life dedicated server for Linux. They say they have no plans to produce a client for Linux, however. So soon you'll be able to serve games for Windows users and not join in the fun yourself! God, I'm so excited I might pee myself. Not.

If you care, there's a handful of details about the server port in an interview at respawn.com. Most importantly, the interview answers the burning question:

Is it at all like the EZbake oven by Kenner?

You'll have to check out the interview for the answer.
