Description: Pingus is a Lemmings-like game for Linux.

Changelog: Release 0.0.9a was broken, this is a fixed version with no new features. The Pingu class is now completly rewritten (seperated in PinguAction, PinguData and Pingu). A new faller animation is included and the other actions are mostly back again. Most of the source isn't very clean, I have to clean it up again for the next release.

Description: An excellent Loderunner rendition with sound.

Changelog: Scavenger was actually updated in January, but I just noticed it. The change is a small one: some animation while digging was added, but I thought this'd be a good opportunity to refresh people's memories about this wonderful Lode Runner clone.

Category: Strategy

This game's a year old, but this is the first I've heard of it. It built cleanly on my system, and while I haven't spent too much time with it yet, it appears to be fully playable despite the early version number.

Description: This is a simple realtime strategy game along the lines of Command & Conquer. The rules, as described in the README:

The main goal is to destroy all enemy buildings. Therefore you have to produce vehicles. Every car needs a controller, and every control station can control five cars.

Furthermore you need energy to build cars and buildings, and every car and building needs energy each round. So you first should build some energy producers.

Special buildings:

Cannon 1+2: Attacks vehicles, very strong, long range, but can not move.
Reserch Center: Allows you to build other cars and buildings
Radar: Allows you to see what happens.

Nelson Rush wins the Penguin's Little Helper Award for giving me the heads up on a number of recently updated projects on the Linux Game Development Webring. Most of today's news items are thanks to Nelson. Among the updates were several development projects that aren't yet far enough along to warrant a Game Tome database entry, but are still worth mentioning:

Quest is a graphical Ultima-ish RPG for X under development by Willem Robert van Hage. It looks to be coming along nicely. Movement, smart scrolling, combat and inventory are all implemented already. The development source is available for downloading at the author's website.

CubeSoft has plans for a 3D game utilizing the Crystal Space engine. The project's goal, in their own words:

Our goal for this game is to have a 3d shootem up game with multiple implementations of several game genres, like quake style, vehicle control(like MechWarrior), occasional strategy points(like Mech Command or Star Seige Tribes), and air(like Fury3 and Descent). It would like branching story line also. This system will be easily modifiable to make several games.

It's ambitious to say the least, but it sure sounds cool. There's nothing of note to download here yet either, but you can join their mailing lists if you're interested in following this project.

LSGE is an attempt to re-create Westwood Software's Command & Conquer game for Linux, by X Sector. Nothing to download here yet, but the news page, last updated mid-March, promises something soon. Apparently there's still a lot to be done, but the scree
nshots sure look nice...
