XShipWars | games | 2725 | XShipWars | Following the instructions lead to a running version with NO PROBLEMS at all. First impression is great - now I have to get into the game... Get it - compile it - have fun Live long and prosper Mathias | 1999-11-26 18:16:44 | 0
Black Penguin | games | -1 | Black Penguin | Fun game to get started with if you are new to Linux. Simple download and installation. | 1999-11-26 21:18:49 | 0
XShipWars | games | 2726 | XShipWars | No documentation, and confusing gameplay. Compiles easy and looks good though. The game needs a few lines explaing the aim of the game, and what's going on. | 1999-11-26 21:27:22 | 0
CrossFire | games | -1 | CrossFire | Decent game, but too much pointless hack'n slash - thankfully, it has its own editor so I can make my own maps. | 1999-11-27 00:44:02 | 0
XShipWars | games | -1 | XShipWars | This game has lots of potential but scant documentation or community. I hope it develops further; could be very cool. | 1999-11-27 00:47:29 | 0

Unreal Tournament | games | -1 | Unreal Tournament | I have been attempting to install the game for the past 3 hours. I consider myself an advanced Linux user, but the installation process has been one headache after another. And I AM using a Red Hat distribution (6.0). First, the setup binary has library dependencies on libxml and libglade. It took me 30 minutes to find this out, though, because the script that invokes the binary redirects STDERR to /dev/null and produces a completely incorrect failure message. So once I discover the problem, spend another half hour locating, downloading and building libglade and libxml, I can run the setup program. Amazingly, setup doesn't notice that I've got the wrong CD mounted (I accidentally left the Redhat CD in from when I was searching for the libraries). The installation appears to go just fine, but when I try to run the game, it core dumps with no useful output. I realize my mistake and mount the correct CD before retrying. This time, setup complains to STDOUT that it's "Unable to find file '$CDPATH$/Help/*'" I see about 10 variations of this message. As before, setup tells me "Congratulations!". I try to run the game again. Core dump. Still no files have been copied from the CD. On a whim, I mount the CD on the default /mnt/cdrom rather than my usual mount point, /cdrom, and tell setup to look there. It works! Apparently nobody at Epic bothered to test the installer with non-default settings. So I now presumably have a complete UT installation. I noted that a link in /usr/local/bin was created, so from my home directory, I attempt to start the game. "Unreal Tournament: error in loading shared libraries: Engine.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" Hmm. I guess I have to start the game from within the /usr/local/games/UnrealTournament/System directory. So why'd they create the symlink in /usr/local/bin? At last, though, I can start the game. I hope it's worth it. Next time, Epic, just give us a .tar file, or find someone more competent to set up the installer. | 1999-11-27 03:35:14 | 0
Fleuch | games | 1958 | Fleuch | All sounds (there are only 4) were recorded on an Amiga by voice using a microphone. BTW: What does supremacy mean ? I checked the glibc file and it is ok. | 1999-11-27 08:39:30 | 0
Unreal Tournament | games | 1900 | Unreal Tournament | Good setup program. I got it to install Unreal pretty easily. The only problem is that I can't play it becuase I don't have a 3dfx graphics card. Anyone know how to get it to use the Software Rendering or the Metal Rendering. I have RH 6.1. | 1999-11-27 12:10:38 | 0
Unreal Tournament | games | -1 | Unreal Tournament | It looks like this would be a really fun game if the mouse behaved properly. As it is, though, it's a challenge just to get the mouse over the right GUI widget in the game's interface. Forget about precise in-game aiming. It's totally great that Epic has produced a Linux port of UT, but it still needs a lot of work. I look forward to the finished product. | 1999-11-27 13:20:39 | 0
