137 2 1999-03-13 22:22:30 Category: Strategy
Interface to go servers
cgoban is an interface to NNGS, IGS and other go servers, allowing one to play go against human opponents. NNGS runs on linux, but doesn't have as many users as IGS, which runs NT.
go is probably the deepest strategy game ever conceived, giving both hemispheres of your brain a real workout. The rules are quite simple, but it takes a lifetime to master the game.
Chess master Lasker has been quoted as saying that go is deeper than chess.
There are other interfaces to the go servers that run on unix, but cgoban is probably the best at the time of this writing (3/13/99).
If you need a lot of explosions to have fun then go probably isn't for you, but if you, for example, enjoy a life-and-death race to see who captures whom first, you might really like go. cgoban new

Silver herrings give you energy, green herrings give you indigestion and Red herrings are - well, red herrings. (Some provide key items of equipment like rocket packs, some turn Tux into "SuperTux", some will have other weird or silly side-effects ranging from giving Tux a cute bow-tie to turning him into "Tuxilla").
Tux can swim, jump, roll, dive, fly (well, sortof - he *is* a Penguin)...the usual "moves" you'd expect.
Steve is writing the game in C++, and 8 year old Oliver is doing 3D modelling and playtesting. We probably won't see an initial release of Tux for another few months until the game engine is fully functional. At that point, Steve says he plans to release the game with a training level or two and then start a web-based project to add levels and generally improve the game.
Although it's still a ways off, this sounds pretty excellent. I can't wait to see more.

More Tux screenshots
Steve Baker's homepage
Tux:A Quest For Herring default
