124 2 1999-03-08 11:04:46 MP Software's Christophe wrote me with a couple of juicy Hopkins FBI items:

A playable demo of the game will be released tomorrow, Tuesday March 9.
The full retail version of Hopkins FBI for Linux will available in the US, Canada, and the UK on March 28, 1999, mere weeks from now. Indeed it is, but the poor FTP server is now suffering from the Slashdot Effect. I don't recommend you attempt a download just yet. As soon as possible I'll make a copy available here. 127 2 1999-03-08 16:37:02 Perhaps several thousand of you noticed that our server was down for many hours today. I appreciate your concern, but please stop emailing me about it now, ok? :-) We're still not sure what the cause of the downtime was...it looks like the server just decided to stop talking to the rest of the world around 10 this morning. A scsi controller is implicated too.
Anyway, the Tome is back up. Hopefully I'll have a mirrored copy of the Hopkins FBI demo online for your downloading pleasure soon. Downtime default
128 2 1999-03-08 16:46:17 Pestilence just forwarded me a message from John Carmack regarding the upcoming retail Quake game + mission pack bundles for Linux. Carmack said:
Quake and Quake2 bundles (the game with both mission packs) will be available well before QuakeArena.
Yet another shrinkwrapped Linux game coming soon to store shelves near you! 130 2 1999-03-10 11:14:26 The site that hosts the FreeCiv web site is undergoing some reorganization this week which includes moving the FreeCiv web site to a new server. Some downtime is expected. Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but right now if you point your browser to www.freeciv.org you'll get the main Ultraviolet.org page instead of the FreeCiv page. An enterprising reader (whose name and address I've accidentally deleted, sorry) pointed out to me that this URL will get you to the FreeCiv site if the "correct" URL doesn't work for you.
In other FreeCiv news, the FreeCiv projects page has been updated. They're currently seeking development help for CivWorld, the FreeCiv map editor project, and the FreeCiv Java client. If you've got some spare programming cycles available, check these projects out and lend a hand. If coding isn't your strength but you'd still like to help out, the FreeCiv manual people are looking for volunteers too. Here's what's new:

Everything from msdos b5
Fixed a vsb (very stupid bug) which caused xmame to hang on exit sometimes
Reintroduced the z80 fix from 0.35b2, you only need it if you're using gcc, you can disable the fix in the makefile if you're using egcs for a slight performance increase. This only affects x86 users. Also note that since the dos-team now is using gcc 2.8.1 more of these bugs might popup, so if you have egcs use it.
Xmame 0.35b5.1 updated
