| 13367 | GtkAtlantic | games | 8247 | Re: GTK2 version?? | I think so, flamewar is always bad, in anyway I have no time to move gtkAtlantic to gtk2, the new monopoly server busy me at all, and I'm not writing any clients anymore, if any people want to be involved to everestd project :), write a client, etc... :)), don't forget to see www.everestd.org, send me a mail at "gradator at everestd dot org", or meet us via irc, irc.freenode.net #gtkatlantic :) | 2003-08-23 18:58:54 | 13329 |
| 13368 | Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory | games | -1 | Re: winmodems | actually a lot of win modems have LESS latency than hardware modems, still as most players will be on a much faster connection now its a big disadvantage, playing as a medic at least the bodies on the floor dont move | 2003-08-23 19:32:19 | 12365 |

| 13372 | America's Army: Special Forces | games | 7841 | Ayayaya! | Ok, i hate the US Army but i tried the game. Here's my conclusion: GOOD: -Graphics Really, really nice up-o-date graphics. They even beat the shit out of modern GPUs. -Sound The speakers are really authentic and the sound effects good. Music's ok too. -Interface A functional Menu interface. You find every command in a short time. -Maps Really many mapsare provided! -Gameplay Gameplay is pretty fun...when you're trained. -Realism The geame is in all aspects very realistic, but... -Official US Army Servers They're fast, but... BAD: -Realism ...not anybody likes that. -Official US Army Servers ...not everyone wants to play on an server hosted by the US Army! -Registration for players You have to give the US Army your email address and a username in order to play online AND to COMPLETE TRAININGS!!! -Registration for servers In order to host games you HAVE TO REGISTER YOUR SERVER! -Training terror To play online with classes like medic etc. you have to do a training. The problem is the trainings are yery time intensive and if you fail you have to do them again. For example in the medic training you have to sit down in a classroom and hear the teacher speak for at least 15-30 minutes (!!!!!). There is no featuire to speed this up!!!! To finish the training you have to do a test where you got questions about what the teacher said. When u didn't hear the teacher (for example you made coffe or ate something) you will fail in the hard test and you have to do the whole shit again. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO SIT DOWN AND HEAR A TEACHER SPEAK 30 MINUTES IN A EGO-SHOOTER!!!!!! Nearly every training is long and boring like that. (the only on whis was fun for me was the paratrooper training) This is just gamedesign terrorism!!! AND THE RESULTS OF YOUR TRAINING EFFORTS ARE SAVED ON AN ARMY SERVER, SO IF YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION FAILS OR YOU AREN'T REGISTERED YOU HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN!!!! ADDITIONALLY ALL YOUR GAMEPLAY IS MONITORED!! -Some crashes For example the game crashed some times when you refresh the server list and so on... -Propaganda Ok, its from the US Army...I exspected tons of propaganda... Conclusion: What started as a great Ego-Shooter (graphcis, gameplay, many maps) got an example for gamedesign terrorism (trainings), user monitoring (user and server registration) and propaganda. BAD, WORSE, WORST!!! PS: I suggest to add an "shoot journalist, children and protestors mode" or an "find a double for saddam to show the media mode". It would rainse the gameplay value... | 2003-08-24 03:01:26 | 0 |
| 13373 | Excido | games | 8426 | Re: Promising! | <p>>I think gameplay would be well served if the flying saucers had a limit to their "visual range", however. Right now, as soon as you get a line of sight to one, it homes in on you. This is a problem, because they can see much farther than the player can.</p> <p>Hmmm, I hadn't realised that this was a problem. When you say that they can see further than you can: what resolution are you playing at? There is (or was, I can't remember) commented out code for limiting Ufo detection range. However, I took that out in my fit of excitement about my new line-of-sight code :-) I will probably put that back in before 0.1.3. <p>>I might also suggest that the third cam view have the ship in the center of the field of view, rather than the bottom edge. That way, you can actually see what's behind you.</p> <p>Yes, it is ugly, isn't it? Those alternate camera views aren't really meant to be ready for prime-time. I mostly just use number 3 for debugging enemy behaviour (top down view makes it easy to see what they're doing). I'll tweak 'em today. | 2003-08-24 03:34:18 | 13340 |
